The creators of Sherlock have said that they wrote him as asexual. It's in the dvd commentary during the restaurant scene in "A Study in Pink."

I believe I know the bit you're referring to, and I didn't interpret it that way. If you'd like to link me to the quote you mean, though, I'd be happy to take a second look.

Although, just in general, I give Word of God less weight than what appears on screen, because I know that characters can change over the course of a series and become rather different from what was originally intended. Like, I bet if you asked Joss Whedon in 1998 if Willow was straight, he would have said yes...

Yeah, that is the comment I was thinking of. This, I think, is what is usually used to claim canonical asexuality: ... He’s interested in what his brain is doing, not the other end of his body.

That, to me, doesn't read as asexual. Or rather, it reads as the really ridiculous idea of asexuals being somehow above the silly, dirty sexual drives of others. I see it the same as how he's not particularly interested in food, or sleep. We know that he desires those things, he just puts them aside because they are distractions. I see him treating sex the same way, which (I think) would be more akin to celibacy than asexuality. And I don't think my interpretation is any less valid than that of people who see him as asexual, so I don't see a need for anyone to make definitive claims like the one I originally replied to.
