I feel your pain.

Honestly I'm not looking forward to graduating, partially because of that...Boy, I'm lazy.

[identity profile] sakikotetsu.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I want to sympathize with you OP, but I just can't feel sorry for someone who got to be unemployed through college :/ Whether that was your choice or not, I've spent too many days waking up at 7am for classes all day and spending all night, as well as weekends, working. Through my experience, being where you're at would mean more free time for me.

Yeah, and when I was in college I used to wish I were still in high school. Welcome to adult life.

[identity profile] amarra-jade.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
At least you're not working retail.

[identity profile] funwithfaustus.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
WOW. I want to know what college you went to since you had time to watch anime until 6am or read Manga instead of textbooks.

Glad there's college students who can just be unemployed and still have the extra money to make cosplays. I work three jobs just to cover full-time tuition...so pretty sure you should appreciate what you have/had.

Working one job with no school would be a relief.

If you schedule your time wisely, you'll be able to do it all, though maybe not with the frequency you did it in college.

[identity profile] amph87.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean OP, that's exactly the reason why I'm in no hurry to graduate. I feel I'm still too young and nerdy to get a regular job. Hell, might even pick another field to study once I'm done with this one.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure why that's a secret. I wish I didn't have to deal with school/work at all so I could spend all my time on things I enjoy. Not a strange thing to want, I wouldn't think.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having a bit of trouble mustering up sympathy for you due to the simple fact that you're employed. I would trade hours upon hours combing the internet while waiting for applications to go through and feeling useless for gainful employment.

Ha, I feel like this sometimes. But then I feel better when I have money to do more than one con a year and be able to spend all the money I want there too.

I'm a full time grad student with an almost-full time (32 hours/week) job, a TAship, an RAship, and Grad Society commitments, weekly parties and outings, and I... ...still play video games for like 20 hours a week and faff about on LJ.

WHAT IS SLEEP? SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK. YOU MIGHT DIE AT 40 BUT THINK OF ALL THE GAMES YOU'LL HAVE PLAYED.

Yup yup. All my friends were playing video games (back in the day when you had to be in the same room for consoles!) until the wee hours of the morning when I had to go home because I had work the next morning.

But remember this! Since you have been working longer, you have more money, and more disposable income!

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Good lord, ditto.

[identity profile] shampayn.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
you can still find time anon :) there's weekends, there's the hours after work, you can do it! i take classes, i work a parttime job, and it's about that time for play rehearsals/shows to start, and i always find time to take part in my hobbies. not as much as i'd like, but i still can (otherwise i'd lose my mind tbh), you can too :D

I think earning money to keep a roof over your head and food on the table should be comfort enough in itself, but perhaps you could use your time wisely this time around so you can still somewhat participate in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's important to balance work and free time. If you're working so many hours that you don't have time for yourself, and you can afford it, then cut back. (Not sure if that's your situation, but it sounds like it...)
pantswarrior: "I am love. Find me, walk beside me..." (hmm...)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2011-08-31 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda relate. This year I finally got a "real job"! The kind that utilizes skills other than having opposable thumbs! Where I'm treated like an adult rather than a mentally deficient kindergartener! This meant I could ditch the retail job I'd been stuck in for six years.

Thing is, at that retail job, I was so much more reliable than most of my coworkers (not to say I'm awesome, just... most of them were exactly the type of slacker who didn't care if they ever got anything better than a retail/fast food job, or if they got fired from this retail job because there were always more retail/fast food jobs) that I was trusted to work alone, and I worked quickly. So I'd get all my tasks done in an hour and spend most of the rest of my solitary shift with my laptop writing fanfic, or watching Star Trek, or playing games on the DS or PSP.

Now that I have the real job, I don't have 5-6 hours a day to devote to writing fanfic and gaming anymore... and I kind of miss it. I wrote a lengthy fic in six months back then, and I've been working on the sequel for a year, and it's still not done. :P

But on the brighter side, the better pay means I don't have to be quite so worried about budgeting for cosplay. And a mature work environment with mature coworkers means I never have to worry about having the vacation time I put in for six months ago for a non-refundable convention revoked because three people quit/were fired within a week's time just before I was supposed to leave. (Yes, this happened. More than once.) I'm learning programming skills at work that are letting me create neat fandom-related things that I couldn't previously do. And somewhat more self-centered - I feel a lot better when I go to a convention or meetup or whatever, and when they ask what I do, I can say that I'm in web development rather than "night shift gas station attendant". It feels kind of good to prove wrong the snobs who assume that all fandom people have no life or aspirations outside fandom.

So... yeah. It's a mixed bag. Time vs. money, I think - I was used to having more time than money, and now that it's the opposite, it feels weird. I think those of us in such a position just need to figure out how to balance everything - that's what I'm trying to work on, anyway. And part of that is realizing how horribly unbalanced my life was previously.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Wow I see a lot of people say this, and I don't know where you guys went to college, but even having classes four days a week most semester, I had absolutely no free time ever as a student. I've always had way more free time for creative/fandom endeavors working full-time jobs than I ever had in college. Is this rare???

Of course right now I am temporarily unemployed and it is awesommmmme except for the little having no money thing. :/

Welcome to growing up. Why do you think adults were always telling you to "enjoy it while it lasts"? It doesn't last and 40 hour week (if they're lucky) is what you had to look forward to. Now you just have to wait until you're 60 and can retire. You'll have all the time in the world, too bad you'll pay for those days you stay up all night watching anime.

Co-signed. I actually thought that graduating from college would mean that I would have BETTER work-life balance (since I was "doing school" pretty much 18 hours a day, 7 days a week) and more time for fandom things. I realize too late just HOW MUCH TIME I spent at school not studying. Even if I was actively working on homework, I would allow myself a couple of minutes to check email, reply to a comment or two, check my friends page, and then go back the homework. I just can't do that at work anymore -- all the free time I had while working has been sucked out and placed into a period of four hours at the end of the day when I'm too tired to want to deal with my flist.
