Personally, I think Donovan's one-note shrillness and Molly's lack of self-respect are perfectly valid reasons for not liking them. If we're shown more dimensions to the characters then maybe that will change but only time will tell. Same applies for Mary and Irene. If they're well-constructed characters, then fine, ot4 orgy at my place, but I place no bets at the present.

Can I talk about me? I personally really like Sally Donovan, though I understand the dislike for her considering she antagonizes the protagonist without being an outright villain. I think that just makes her awesome, but she's harder to swallow for some. I found Molly really, really hard to watch; she hit my embarrassment squick like crazy. It's not so much that I don't like her as that it pains me to see her behave the way she does — on some level I relate to it and it is the worst. I am so, so looking forward to Irene Adler and I truly hope she gets a fair shake — and oh, if she gets to interact with Sally Donovan, that would be most excellent, as I have shipped Sally/Irene since the thought first crossed my mind. (And this one time got someone to write some for me (http://moodfic.livejournal.com/184545.html).)

I don't have a lot of experience with Sherlock Holmes and its adaptations, but while I wasn't enamored with Mary in the 2009 movie, I did like her in the one or two stories she was in I've read, and I think I could love her a lot — again, if the show does good by her. (I'm kind of terrified after the way this series of DW has treated Amy so far.)

The phrase 'strong female character' gets tossed around a lot.

Donovan's more of an 'obnoxious female character'.

I've seen some good stories for Sally. And for Sarah Sawyer too, come to think of it. Not too much whining, but then again I tend to stick to the fic and ignore the discussions which might skid into wank.

I kind of hope that they remember that Irene Adler is so very taken in canon. She's had an affair with royalty and she gets married in the story. Her main attraction (as far as Sherlock is concerned) is that she sees through his disguise. Like the word "Norbury", the picture of Irene is meant to be a reminder that he always misses something.

The problem with only three episodes is that minor characters (and Sally is one, alas) just don't get a chance to show more than one side. Irene Adler, as the focus of the story, is more likely to be dimensional.

I'm not going to say there isn't a level of hypocrisy in the fandom (there's a level of that kind of hypocrisy in every fandom), but you have to keep in mind that it's a big fandom. A lot of the times, the people who have a "hate-on" for Sally etc are not the same people complaining about a lack of female characters. Plus I have read some very good fics (and some very complimentary posts) about her and Sarah and Molly. It's just a matter of luck and knowing where to look.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Somewhat off-topic, but I just hope they don't make Irene Adler a villain, or even an anti-villain. Most modern interpretations recast her as some kind of Catwoman, but she really wasn't. She was a worthy adversary, but she wasn't an adversary because she was a criminal. She was an adventuress and Holmes got all up in her business trying to take her shit.

That's all I wanted to say.

I'm not in the fandom enough to comment on this, but I agree that Irene and Godfrey should be absolutely in love. I've always thought that they were well-matched. (Not that we ever meet Godfrey in the Doyle stories, but he comes off as calm and plain to match the sheer insanity that is Irene's life).

[identity profile] bluerosefairy.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. OH MY GOD THIS.

Fandom aside, because I've been in fandom for a long time, and the shrieking over female characters "ruining" the main slash pairing is never going to end - I really hope we get more development for our already-existing female characters as well as an awesome Irene and Mary. I want to see more of Sally Donovan (who is awesome and seriously, if someone outed my personal shit at a crime scene, I might dislike them too), more of Sarah Sawyer (who is badass and smart and needs to be John's sane BFF), more of Anthea (who has a ton of potential), more of Mrs. Hudson (she's got a fun catchphrase, but more characterization plz) and more of Molly (who gets the worst rap, but seriously, not everyone can be badass).

And I also hope we do get Sherlock/Irene. Because not only do I ship it and think it's pretty, but I just want to kick back and watch fandom go 'splode.

Donovan and Molly aren't super likable - at best, Molly's a bit of a sympathetic character - but that's not to say I don't agree with you a little. Fortunately there's plenty of fandom to go around and if Irene and Mary are written well, there will be even more.

But wanting more strong female characters/POC =/= having to like the examples present. Pretty much the only thing I dislike about Sherlock is how unkindly it portrays women. Sally, for one, actually feels more like a human being in fic I've read than in the show, and I think that says good things for the fandom.

ehhhh. I like Sally a lot tbh (Molly I just feel bad for) but I also liked Sarah and Soo-Lin and Anthea, and want Mary and Irene to be done well.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I like Donovan, but I'm not active in the fandom. Molly, though-- Molly is embarrassing, because she pretty much acts out every date rejection I've ever had, and all the time. She has literally done nothing else.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
You act as if it's the same group of people doing all this complaining and that that the complainers are a majority of the fandom. No, we aren't just a single homogeneous hive-minded group. We've got all types here: those who will defend character A to death and those who hate her guts. Those who are terribly threatened by Sherlock shagging a chick, and those who are excited about it.

Taking the wankiest grumbles and acting like that's the consensus of fandom is ridiculous.

Listen, my advice? Go back to reading fic. Four of my favorite WIPS have updated in the last couple of days. This fandom fucking delivers.

It never ceases to amaze me how involved people get in this fandom when there's only been 3 episodes. I guess it's because it's not treated like a one off movie, but an on-going series (which it is), but some of the complaints are ridiculous.

Honestly, I find it pretty pathetic when people try to fuss over Sherlock's female characters. Because there's barely any canon, and what's there is pretty much just about the boys. It's grasping at straws.

But anyway. I hope they do Irene justice, and I hope the show continues to develop Sherlock and John's platonic relationship.

(Question about Mary, because I'm woefully ignorant about ACD's canon -- does she actually stick around for long? I heard that Watson goes through a couple of wives)

We-ell, actually I like Molly and Sally. My problem with the female characters is that they are way too tertiary and one-note--I blame that on the writing more than the actresses, though.

Molly needs more combative scenes with Sherlock (I love their "you gained three pounds!" "two and a half!" exchange) because it shows her backbone--and she's obviously smart if she is the one giving Sherlock permission at the morgue (as opposed to talking to her superior). However, I think Sherlock acts towards her exactly how he would act if she were a man--manipulative. Also, if you've read her canon blog, it shows how adorably silly she is. Personally I think it's a bit too silly to the point of caricature (like Kelly from the Office) but I don't think that doesn't make her a fun character, if only they would do more with her.

Sally is fun, but again, one note. She just acts perturbed at John and pissed at Sherlock. Give her more emotions! I loved her little nudge to Lestrade when he said, "Well don't commit suicide!"

Meanwhile, I'm worried Irene will be shown as "cleverer than Sherlock" by making Sherlock go all mad for her. Moffat likes that power dynamic in his hetero relationships. Personally, I would think that if we got Sherlock to merely respect Irene it would certainly show how important she is to him (as she was in the books).

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I feel the OP is quite right about how lots of the dislike the female 'Sherlock' characters get is because of other causes (as getting in the middle of the slash, or being 'mean' to Sherlock (no matter if he deserves it like woah), or whatever). Obviously, there're people who don't like some of them for legit reason (like characterization not feeling right), which is absolutely fine.

Personally, I like all those female characters, and the ones to intrigue me the most are precisely two of the most less well-liked: Donovan and Molly.

The Donovan-Sherlock relationship is highly interesting. It's obvious Donovan despises him, but pay close attention at the very familiar way they talk/insult each other, and at the way Sherlock treats and looks at her. Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks that there's a story there. The first thing that comes to my mind is that, perhaps, the ways nowadays Sherlock uses to manipulate Molly to do his bidding are not new at all, and perhaps in the past he did something similar to Donovan. Or it could be another thing. But there must be *something* there, just compare the Sherlock-Donovan interaction with the Sherlock-Anderson one, for example.

As for Molly... well, it was (and is!) funny to speculate how she could be much more than she appears to be at first sight. But even if she's not the Real Moriarty/part of the Moriarty organization/Moran/whatever, I think it will be interesting to see her grow this next season after the Moriarty fiasco, and watch her interaction with Sherlock change (and Sherlock change towards her and be more 'human', perhaps?). Also, she's adorable ^^

The rest of the female characters (Mrs. Hudson, Anthea (I hope we see her again this season!), Sarah) I like too, for different reasons. Also, I'm curious about how Irene is going to be portrayed, and I really don't understand the slashers riot against her, with this series being as accurate to the book canon as it is on the main facts.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-31 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Irene might be fun, but I don't want outright Sherlock/Irene- maybe a few 'are they aren't they' hints. I just don't like the idea of Sherlock 'not my area' Holmes just suddenly deciding otherwise. I didn't mind it so much in the Guy Ritchie films, because they didn't feel so...Holmesly, if that makes sense. In Sherlock, it feels more like classic Holmes, and so love interests make me more edgy.

That said, I desperately want a modernised 'The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton'. Hilarious. Horrible, but hilarious.

I also have a mild uncertainty about Sherlock/Irene seeing as the original story starts with Watson going on for a few paragraphs about how HOLMES IS A MACHINE, HOLMES DOES NOT LOVE, THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS STORY IS ABOUT.

I just have this feeling Irene is going to be River Song 2.0. And while I quite like River Song in DW, DW's a less dark, more fun-loving series, and I just can't see a character like her working the same way in Sherlock.

Still! Who knows, she may be spot-on. I'll reserve judgement.

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-08-31 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if you want to complain about Molly's and Sally's treatment, it's more on the writers than the fandom really. From the very little canon we have, Sally is portrayed as bigoted (i.e. always referring to Sherlock as 'Freak' and 'Psychopath' which, I'll be honest, bothers the hell out of me) and she's fairly seriously slut-shamed. Molly is shown as desperate. I just don't think that the way the characters are written allows for a very positive view of them.

Also, most of the fanfic I've read puts Sally, at least, in a much better light.

I'm not saying that the only reasons that people dislike Sally and Molly are down to the writers, and I'm sure there are people who do dislike them for the reasons you mentioned, but I haven't seen much evidence for what you're saying in the fandom.
