This is going to be a weird analogy, and I know genetics research has said this is false, but.. genetically, I always assumed bending worked in the (now false but still widely believed) same way that not everyone can roll their tongue, but the ones that can need to be taught how to do it. Like a dormant ability, but I think it seems to be somewhat random, but probably carried on genetically after it manifests. (In The Fortune Teller we're shown a set of twins, and only one is a bender; In Korra, Mako and Bolin are brothers and they bend two different elements; Katara is her family's only bender, etc.)

I know you said it was false but still a part of me is sitting here going "No way, my daughter could roll her tongue when she was a baby!"

(I can too; her father can't...)

Anyway, my main point is that I essentially agree with you.

There was a recent interview where they said that Sokka was born with the ability to bend, but because he wasn't interested in bending and never tried using it the talent flickered out in him when he was still a kid.

okay never saw that, so I (and probably 3 other people or so in thread) are gonna need source.
