Okay, I'll try not to lose my temper or anything, because I really can't stand the movie, but. Howl's Moving Castle is a book written in the eighties by a British author named Dianna Wynne Jones. Miyazaki supposedly made an adaptation of it, but what he did was create entirely his own story and stuck the basic concept and title on it. It felt, to me, like the movie was trying to cash in on something that it wasn't. The characters, while sharing the same name, are completely different, and many of the major plot devices were changed into things more suitable for a typical Miyazaki movie. Basically: that movie is not HMC. It just isn't.

Also, as a Miyazaki appreciator, I have to say that, in storytelling quality, it was a far cry from Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke or any other movie of his that I love. My mom and I watched together; I had read the book and she hadn't, and by the second half neither of us had any idea what the hell was going on.

Also there are tons of fans who don't know the book even exists, which kind of annoys me, even though that isn't their fault.
