Yeah, I'm in the same boat. It's really starting to sound like it's just going to be another run-of-the-mill zombie movie, which really defeats the purpose.

Did I hear correctly that they're even changing the title, or was that just an internet rumor?

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect that someone had a zombie script lying around and the studio decided to use it with the more marketable title.

Supposedly, this is exactly what happened with I, Robot:

That book would be virtually impossible to make as a movie that's both faithful to the book and actually works as a movie.

Not necessarily. A faux documentary/District 9 type film would have worked and upheld the spirit of the book .

Completely disagree. It would have been awesome if they'd filmed it documentary-style.

Even better as a miniseries, though.

[identity profile] rozola.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
with the millions and millions of dollars that get put into movies, i have no doubt that any concept could work in a movie format.

unfortunately, hollywood isn't interested in experimenting. they just want to spew out the next big action movie.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, how I love this book!

Changes are necessary when you're adapting a book, OP; sometimes, something that works on paper don't work on screen. Let's hope they're doing a good job because I really want to enjoy that movie as much as I enjoyed the book.

OP

Changes I can deal with, but the rumors are that they are changing it from a post-apocalypse look at human survival and turning it into a race-against-the-clock action/adventure to prevent the zombie war. That's just completely different.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I try not to get too upset when adaptations change things, but I was really hoping they'd keep the heart of this book. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll suck no matter what they do.

[identity profile] 1adychaos.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard the rumors. Still, I think the book as-is would be difficult to film. Just about the time a viewer became involved with a character, the venue would change.

I could see this as a trio of movies: the outbreak, people fighting back (maybe the South African safe zones [sorry it's been too long since I read the book and I can't remember the name for them] and finally ten years after when the narrator begins his interviews.

There's so much to like. I just don't see how it can be done in two hours.

I'll still pay to see it when it comes out, though.

[identity profile] lady-lilith.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless it's a documentary style narrative, it won't be faithful to the book.

But if they can make Moneyball into a movie.... anything is possible.

I still fear for this movie. It's one of my all time favourite books.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAAAAH WAAAAH WAAAAH. THEY'RE MAKING A BOOK INTO A MOVIE AND IT'S NOT GONNA FOLLOW IT TO THE T. WHAAAAAAAAA!

Ok, seriously? Everyone who thinks that it's actually possible to make a movie of a book and be completely 100 % faithful is dilusional and has fuck all idea of the difference between mediums and what is involved in the creation of each.

DO SOME FUCKING RESEARCH ON THAT.

Also, I am SO fed up with people bitching about movies they haven't even seen THAT HAVE NOT EVEN BEEN RELEASED YET. How NARROW-MINDED do you have to be?!

[identity profile] quorothorn.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Comic book rather than pure text to be sure, but actually, the Sin City movie was pretty much faithful to a T.

[identity profile] eiremauve.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, if the rumors are true, it sounds like that it will have even less resemblance to the original source than the Resident Evil movies. Of course, they are only rumors, but still. Name-dropping (which is what the RE movies are) is always annoying. "See? We totes have some resemblance to the book. Watch us!" Frankly, if you're going to adapt the book, adapt it. Just don't keep some names and have nothing else there. That's just lame.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
OK, take it easy there asshole. It's not simply making a few changes in the adaptation process. It's taking the entire nature of the book and tossing it out to make a typical "hero saves the day" flick. Maybe you should do some research before you shout at random people on the Internet.

In short, you are an idiot.

[identity profile] baronyiffington.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that they aren't even ATTEMPTING to follow the story of the book.

The book was about the POST apocalypse world, where all the zombies are already dead and people are rebuilding.

The movie is about some guy trying to STOP the zombies.

Completely different story, with the name World War Z slapped on it to lure the book fans in for a cheap buck. It doesn't even have the same fucking main character.

I think it is a real shame. It sounds like the adaptation is just going to be another zombie film. The book took the genre in a different direction, but the film will be generic.

Doubt I will see it.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well if they don't have zombies walking along the sea floor (and somehow magically not falling into crevasses/vents/getting torn apart by blunt damage or pressure/dissolved/eaten by microorganisms) it'll be a marked improvement ;p

Yeah yeah yeah realism in a zombie movie, I know. Also, hopefully there'll be more than two stories about women in a book about like 20 survivors. That'll be grand.

To be honest, I'm just happy they're making a zombie movie. The industry is so full of vampires and werewolves right now that I worried zombies were getting left behind. I prefer to reserve reservations about the movie until there's at least a trailer released. I know it won't be exactly like the book, that's a given. There's too much information in the book that it'd be impossible to fit it all into one movie. It sounds like it's based on the book, not an adaptation. Which makes sense. I'll probably go see it regardless and I'm rarely disappointed when zombies are involved anyways.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom. I'm not sure if I'll even see the movie. But that book is AMAZING.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just gonna echo another comment, this book is gonna be a tall order to turn into a movie. If I remember right, it's basically a collection of reports, interviews, and stories over a span of some years.

Also, I had no idea this was slated for a movie (OT:too busy getting pumped for the One For the Money movie right now). And I've sworn off horror movies several years ago because I'm the nervous type and I spend most of my time with my face stuck in the popcorn bag. But, Left 4 Dead got me into the zombie thing...and I did like the book...Uh-oh...

[identity profile] behindgrey-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the whole book [first chapter was in the Sunday Herald] but I gather from videos of the shoots in Glasgow the zombies are much faster than in the book. I love details like that in things and I'm sure when I get round to reading the book it would piss me off if they have big changes like that.

Couldn't be much worse then the source material.

Hth, but if you're going to make it doco style, don't make everything so clearly ridiculous - even for this genre which revels in such.
