You've heard about that guy in South Korea who died playing Starcraft nonstop, right? You're confusing starvation with weight loss.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this secret is scaring me a little. There really is such a thing as unhealthy weight loss, folks.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This, basically. Healthy weight loss isn't starving yourself and denying yourself food.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Korea + Starcraft = Motherfucking scary.

But I also find football + cheerleaders in the US to be scary too. So, I may not be the best judge of things.

[Just fyi, Canada + Hockey = Natural, not scary :D]

That was actually due more to physical exhaustion after about 50 hours of non-stop playing. I'm not saying that not eating didn't contribute, but the main factor was a heart failure from pushing himself too hard. He was getting very little sleep. I'm talking taking 10 minute breaks just to nap and go to the bathroom.

Starcraft is crazy in Korea, but it's a legit sport over there. Their players can get sponsorships of $100,000 if they're a good player. So, dying from it over there is akin to someone who pushes themselves too hard training for the Olympics or something.

Possibly screwed? Good rarely comes from starving oneself, but if WoW can actually help you get used to a (hopefully nutritious and sufficient) reduced diet by being a fun distraction from unnecessary urges to eat, then that might not be so bad.
Good diets should come with hobbies, maybe.

But again, ignoring the necessary and healthy urges to eat and starving oneself will end badly, so like with everything, it's bad to go overboard. So if that's the case, a solid schedule for food might help. Be careful!

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to immediately jump onto the "You're starving yourself!" train. Because it really depends on how much you're still eating. A lot of people -- myself included -- will munch on things out of habit or boredom, not because we're hungry/in need of fuel.

So, as long as you're still eating, probably, between 1,200 and 2,000 calories a day, it's really not a big deal (though, it would be good to get some exercise, too). But, as others have said, if you're skipping real meals/snacks for WoW...yeah, that's not good.

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You have an addiction! Please seek help!

Also, like everyone else said, starving yourself is actually not an effective weight loss plan, because it fucks your metabolism super bad. Maybe you could spend an hour a day you usually use to play WoW and either cook something tasty and healthy, or go to the gym.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't know how starved OP actually is, though.

If she used to overeat because she was bored, and Warcraft keeps her from being bored, that's not a bad thing.

This is clearly a nonsense though.

I know the 'low carbs!' crowd love to preach all that sort of rubbish, but if you eat less you lose weight. Even if you eat a hell of a lot less, we vastly overestimate the required amount of daily intake. If you're getting to the point starvation is messng up your metabolism, you're eating little enough that you're still going to be droppin dem pounds.

Now this probably isn't super healthy (though we overplay this - unless you're to the point of anorexia, and your body starts to eat itself, it's not directly unhealthy bar serious illness or getting hit by a car etc but eh).

As long as you get off WoW to go to work/school/the store, I think you're fine. I need distractions so I don't just sit around and eat too. I find when I score baseball games, I don't want to snack because both hands are busy, that's helped me lose weight. I hope that's what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't judge you for this at all, because I also often just forget/can't be bothered to eat. Not because of video games necessarily, but whenever I'm doing something more interesting than eating, and for me that's almost everything. I hate cooking and the time it takes. I'm waiting for convenient nutritional pills to be invented so I never have to eat real food again. Get on with it, science.

Just remember to go outside and stuff too. Obviously. WoW =/= real life. If it's distracting you from habitual snacking habits that caused your weight, then COOL, but be sane about it. XD

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it necessarily qualifies as an addiction. I know that sometimes I will be doing something distracting enough that I forget, like writing or working on art. I will look at the clock go 'o crap!' and then just say forget it, I'll keep working.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My god, if you never want to stop playing what on earth do you do when you need to go to the bathroom? I don't even want to know.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The WoW Diet! Yep, I've been on that. Saves money too since I eat one less meal, or eat like an orange instead of a pizza when I do get peckish. Plus being inactive for long periods of time means I don't need all the extra calories.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
She (he?) didn't say she stopped snacking. She said she stopped *eating.*

Please get help, OP. D:

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
While I agree that this isn't healthy, I'm guilty of this too. Not with WoW, but when I get so involved in something I easily lose track of time. Especially when I'm programming. Hours pass by without me noticing and then I feel hungry, but I ignore it because I feel like it's only been a couple hours when it's actually closer to 7. A trick I've used is that I always have a glass of water by my desk and frequently drink it. Eventually I've got to get up and go to the bathroom (that I can't ignore) and when I do I'll take a pass by the kitchen to grab something. It's not always healthy, but it's better than nothing.

[identity profile] luindilwen.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've definitely skipped meals/opted out of eating properly because OH MY GOD IT'S RAID NIGHT THERE'S NO TIME FOR A NUTRITIOUS DINNER, but there's doing that a few times and there's making a habit out of it.

Please take care of yourself, OP. Your toon and your guild/raid group/RP friends can wait for you.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only WoW player who plays with a bag of chips beside me or something, I hear so many secrets like this.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
How long does it take to level in WoW now? A couple weeks to end-game content, you do a raid and then you're locked out for the week. Now what? I honestly don't know how people can still play WoW this way with the way it is today. Maybe pre-WotLK and definitely pre-BC when you had to be constantly PvPing if you wanted to keep your rank. I stopped playing because it got ridiculously boring. I would log on, do my dailies, do a couple randoms, chat with people, put auctions up, do a couple BGs and then log off. The grindy nature of it took up my freetime at night, but I'd be hard pressed to find much else to do past that. And half the time I didn't even want to do all that because it became more of a chore than fun. :/

Eh, I don't eat when I'm gaming either, OP. Then again I don't eat much overall, and you don't need to eat much if you're sedentary anyway. On days off when I don't bother leaving the house I might have like one sandwich the entire day, but I don't think it's necessary to eat more than that if you're just sitting on the couch. And my doctor tells me I'm a healthy weight, so hey.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Different game, a mmorpg. I lost weight for the same reason.

And then I found a job, and gained a lot of weight.

funny how people thought I was less of a loser when i was so engrossed in a game instead of RL.

be careful on the roundabout.

guys I wouldn't be scared, she isnt going to starve herself, I dont think. just eat less.
