You are completely correct. I noticed that too, but it's more in the recent years. The older posts on the kinkmeme have more character prompts and less RPF. Which is a shame because I don't care about fake stories about real people and want to read about my favorite characters. But those stories are now so few.

I'm thinking it might be because the gloss of the characters is gone after 6 years. Meanwhile, through cons and interviews, the fans have gotten to know the actors better and created some sort of fantasy world about them. Maybe that's why they now like to write about them more. It's a shiny new toy in an otherwise old fandom.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. It's quite disappointing because I can't get over my personal dislike of RPF so I'm missing out on so much fanfic! But oh well, people will like what they like I suppose xD

Not being into SPN I can't really say for sure, but my guess is that they can't handle writing two brothers in love. If they just want the OMG HOT it's easier to write that than try to deal with the complications of incest.

If they're writing two actors who aren't the brothers though, I have nfi.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, based on my limited contact with the fandom (mostly through fic) that seems to be the reason. What I especially enjoy is the fact that there's so many RPF AUs, like it's even one more step away from both incest and RPF, which is still kind of badly seen.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it makes some sense, I guess? I have nothing against writing fictional incest, and I have nothing against writing RPF, so I don't think I'd go to either extreme. But both incest and RPF definitely have squick taboos that I can understand why people aren't comfortable with writing. But if you still think the characters of Sam and Dean are hot and want to see them boning each other, it's easy to sort turn them/their actors into some mesh of original character AU thing and go with that. (Especially so you can eliminate pesky things like real life girlfriends/wives/whatever.) The writer in me goes WHY NOT JUST WRITE ORIGINAL FIC, but with RPF AUs, you've got an already made fanbase of people who will read and comment on your works. So, even though it's generally totally not something I'd do, I can understand why it exists and even why in such abundance.

I find most RPF fandoms tend to be AU heavy.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had to choose between incest and RPF, I'd pick RPF too.
Plus RPF is awesome so sucks to be you OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Who even cares, tbh.

"It's like nobody respects their personal lives at all."

Oh, I see. You're one of THOSE people.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
THOSE people who respect others! Damn them.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-09-06 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nonny has no room to talk about THOSE people.

[identity profile] tw-31988.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
ia. i don't read that much fic but in general i usually slash character and not real-life people. idk, it seems a bit weird to me but whatever rocks your boat.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in the fandom (I get my supernatural fix from Lost Girl, so that should tell you where my interests lie), but I always thought the RPS part of the fandom was the people taking the high road?

That was my impression anyways (through my hearsay experience of the fandom).

OT

Your comment combined with your icon made me look up Lost Girl and it looks like I now have a new show to watch. Damn you, Jane and Maura wielding person, damn you.

Mwahahha, my plan has succeeded! [I had a plan, I swear]

You only have a season to catch up on until the new one starts :D Plus I don't know where you are, but I think it is also airing in the US this year too, I just can't remember what channel.

You won't regret it, promise (:

Unless you know something we don't, writing J2 is not writing about their personal lives. We don't really know them at all so it is basically just two fictional characters, the same as fps.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into RPF in any fandom. For me, the "characters" are more interesting than that actors. The characters are the ones with the super powers, not human, live in whatever time period and all the other interesting things. You can't get that with actors.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at too. I don't have any moral problem with RPF, it's just that I think actors are boring! They audition, they tape shows, they learn lines, they do interviews....OK. Kind of mundane and meh to me. Sure, there's a lot of creative and inventive AUs out there--but I guess I'd still rather read about the characters doing that stuff.

I wanna read about the guys who kill monsters and make deals with demons and have bizarre family issues involving women burning to death on the ceiling and have dysfunctional relationships with angels. Oddly, I really do love the fourth-wall-breaking episodes of the show, but unless it's one of those, I kind of want to pretend that the characters are real and that Jensen and Jared and Misha don't even exist.(Nothing against them personally) I see the characters, not them.

tl;dr: Actors are boring, characters are interesting.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into RPF, but I'd hardly say it's disrespecting their personal lives. I mean, it's not as if anyone is saying that the things they write about in fic has actually happened.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people think so. lol

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure if you hang out elsewhere in fandom, a ton of the fic is not RPF. And there's still plenty of sex.

Also...post non-RPF prompts on kinkmeme?

[identity profile] 13chapters.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I read and write both RPF and FPF - they have really different appeals. FPF is dark and angsty (fun!) while RPF is often light and fluffy (also fun!).

Frankly, there's so much of both that it seems silly to complain about the lack of either.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Overall there are less rpf stories than other fic* as a whole (hate to say it because I am a RPF fan). Of course, the numbers I go by are from last year, so there may have been an uptick in rpf this year, but even then it would take a large amount to off-set the number of other fic*.

As for not respecting them, I think some fans do and some don't and it has nothing to do with the fic they read.

* - Other fic refers to Slash and Gen, both genres b themselves are larger than the rp genre.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on what I know of the fandom, the RPF seems to have started because the main pairing of the fandom was incestual. A lot of people are squicked about fantasizing about two 'brothers', but the actors are not related. This is weird to those of us in normal fandoms (where characters aren't real, therefore they get slashed), but no one ever accused SPN fandom of being normal ;)

"SPN: Where RPF is the moral high ground."
