Not being into SPN I can't really say for sure, but my guess is that they can't handle writing two brothers in love. If they just want the OMG HOT it's easier to write that than try to deal with the complications of incest.

If they're writing two actors who aren't the brothers though, I have nfi.

Yeah, based on my limited contact with the fandom (mostly through fic) that seems to be the reason. What I especially enjoy is the fact that there's so many RPF AUs, like it's even one more step away from both incest and RPF, which is still kind of badly seen.

Well it makes some sense, I guess? I have nothing against writing fictional incest, and I have nothing against writing RPF, so I don't think I'd go to either extreme. But both incest and RPF definitely have squick taboos that I can understand why people aren't comfortable with writing. But if you still think the characters of Sam and Dean are hot and want to see them boning each other, it's easy to sort turn them/their actors into some mesh of original character AU thing and go with that. (Especially so you can eliminate pesky things like real life girlfriends/wives/whatever.) The writer in me goes WHY NOT JUST WRITE ORIGINAL FIC, but with RPF AUs, you've got an already made fanbase of people who will read and comment on your works. So, even though it's generally totally not something I'd do, I can understand why it exists and even why in such abundance.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I think is going on.

And I mean, I used to read a lot of J/J AUs, pretty much just as original fic because at the time I couldn't keep the actors straight in my head anyway (pun sort of intended), so I'm not really judging the people who write it. It's just kind of interesting to me that that's how fandom evolved.

I saw it explained once that the reason why they (the author/friends) write RPF fic is b/c that they want people/readers for their original fic. Some authors write fanfic and then file the serial numbers off to publish as original fic but (some) RPF authors are essentially writing original fic and adding RPF elements to get readers for their original fic (fanfic). Makes sense to me. I used to be up in arms and heavily squicked by RPF but since I read that I'm much less squicked and have even read a few.

I find most RPF fandoms tend to be AU heavy.
