...Is there something wrong with choosing not to be anon on a meme? I figured the option was there so that a prompter or filler couldn't be traced/humiliated/etc if they didn't attach their name, particularly if the prompt or fill isn't exactly 'mainstream,' but that ultimately it was up to the individual.

That's always been my thought too. But apparently there are some people who hate people posting un-anon on memes.

Yeah I wonder about this too o_o It's just an option.

I guess people prefer anon commenting so that the writer cannot come back and delete their prompts/fills.

For me the animosity towards non-anon posting on kink memes actually comes from something completely different. it's not the prompting, it's the fills. I just think if most people anon and a select few don't and get away with it, it gives them an unfair visibility and status.

I went through a km of one of my fandoms recently to hunt for prompts and it was perfectly clear: everyone who doesn't anon and who no one ever says anything to about it? All the BNFs. The whole list.

I think a kink meme is the one place in fandom where it can be accomplished that fics get read and get comments for people just liking the fic, the content or the style, or whatever. Not due to who wrote them.

In my experience the BNFs who are un-anon at kink memes become BNFs through said kink memes. Personally I'm 50/50 when it comes to filling prompts. Sometimes I'm anon and sometimes I'm not. Often it has more to do with length of the fic when I'm un-anon. If it's a long fic I don't want to deal with comment posting, so I just link to my journal.

On the other hand there are some fics that I write where I'm not actually "out" in that fandom so I fill anon so no one knows it was me, or I'm ashamed of the kink.

It all comes down to personal preference.

What about fics where they post the whole fic in comment form, get lots of comments and praise, and then un-anon so they can repost a cleaner version of the fic?
I knew a lot of people who used kink memes as ways to branch into a new fandom. They'd start anon to see if people liked their work and then they would un-anon in order to make friends within the fandom.

Well, that is fair game.

You can't forbid people who write fics to post them to the main comms once they've written them. And most people, I think, eventually do.

But if a kink meme asks you to post anonymously? You should do it. No matter who you are.

Well yeah if the meme is one that actually asks for anon posting that's another matter entirely. I've only seen one of those though. Most kink memes I've seen don't say one way or the other so it's usually left up to the users how they want to post.

But does it really have to be formulated as a rule? A lot of memes I've seen put where they explayin how it works something like "people anonymously post their prompts and others then anonymously fill them."

If I read that at the beginning of a meme, even if it's not a rule, exactly, I find it a given that I anon. I dunno. lol Call me old-fashioned, but for me that is still the spirit of kink memes anyway.

If it's an explicit rule of the comm then it's a given you should be anon, if you want to participate, and I see your point about visibility and reading for content, not author loyalty. There may be this exact BNF situation on a kinkmeme for a rather tiny fandom of mine, but hey.

I suppose that because de-anoning means I get alerts when someone replies, rather than having to manually bookmark and check back on a thread or try to parse out said relevant responses from the flood in my inbox, that it never occurred to me that it might necessarily be a negative thing. It certainly cuts down on the "Hey, where did [x] go? Can I have a link? What's going on?" kind of comments.

For me I prefer people to post logged in, so if they abandon their fic I know where to find them to see what's what. With an anon author and an abandoned fic there's just never any closure and you can't track them down and beg them for more.

Ok so maybe I wouldn't track them down to harass them but it would be nice to be able to check on someone's journal and see that "oh hey, they've been on vacation for the past month, so maybe they intend to finish that fic after all." Versus this fic that's a complete unknown with no clue or anything. I'm fine with authors discontinuing their stuff, that's their right. I'd just like to know for sure one way or the other rather than sit in fic-limbo.

I've seen other fandom secrets where people think you're an attention whore if you're not anon and that you're full of yourself. I have a sock journal just for TRACKING my prompts on memes but I don't use said sock to do fills (I hate my writing). Then I hear "well get a paid account." Not everyone can afford that when there are other things they are paying for too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting fills unanon, but I side-eye people who make requests signed in. I'm sure it isn't true of all signed-in requesters, but it always makes me think the person is hoping to use their standing in the fandom to up their chances of having their request written, and that really rubs me the wrong way, for some reason.

I'll also admit to thinking it's annoying when someone namefags all over a kink meme just to second things and comment on things, and they second or comment on almost everything.

I've never been much of one for prompting on memes (my plot ideas tend to be crap and I vastly prefer filling), but this is my reasoning for people who don't prompt anonymously. I don't have the money for a paid account, so if I were to prompt something, I'd be unable to track it without tracking the whole damn meme, which can suck something awful.

If a kink meme has no fast and hard rule about mandatory anonymity then many people just don't care about going anon and dealing with captcha and whatever. A lot of people also go anon because they're a little embarrassed by their kinks, but if someone isn't then why bother doing anon? I honestly don't think there is some vast conspiracy going on here (and even if someone was trying to use their BNF status to try and get fic I don't really see the big deal. If they have been consistently filling fic at the meme, then maybe they do deserve to have their request filled. Though to be honest I don't think most people are inclined to fill the prompt of a BNF over someone else anyway and I haven't seen many people fall over themselves to do so. Ultimately it's about how interesting the prompt itself is and whether it inspires someone to write)

It always annoys me on my fandom's kink meme when one of the maintainer's posts their requests logged in. When it's just some sock account or unknown fan, it's one thing but the maintainer doing it feels like they're just being extra pushy. (Doesn't help that she leaves super long and super boring prompts.)

This, especially since a lot of the times I think people want their fic in their journal or something traced to them, instead of filling it anon. Most memes I've been to choosing to be anon is optional and hasn't been an issue.
