Ugh, yeah, being a mod of anything can make you realize this if just hanging around the net doesn't. :(

completely incapable of following a few simple rules

Then I laughed.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Bet you suck as a mod though.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, participating anonymously in a kink meme showed ME what a whiny, bitchy, ungrateful, and demanding person I can be. *is ashamed*

I mean... just don't let it get to you. People only complain when there's something wrong. (And sometimes they complain when there's nothing wrong, too.) BUT any time they're not complaining? It's because your meme is seriously PERFECT.

I speak from experience -- I've gotten worked up about an issue and had people tell me it wasn't an issue for them; I've called another anon out on rule-breaking only to have the mod say they didn't consider it rule-breaking. I'm trying to be more chill on kink memes, I really am, so I apologize on behalf of all the fussy anons that pop up randomly just to complain. There's just something about anonymity that makes it so much easier to get annoyed AND be annoying.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's an accountability thing. The annoyances are still there, it's just when we're logged in, even if it is just an LJ account it's us, and that comment will reflect on us. But if no one knows who we are, it doesn't matter. We can express our feelings over all those little irritants we normally ignore.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Also run a meme and the "follow a few simple rules" thing makes me shake my head. A lot. But there's no wank at my meme, so I still feel like I won the meme lottery in comparison to what some mods have to deal with.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Being in charge of anything ruins the fun. I started a slash community years back and it grew pretty fast, but I felt like I couldn't participate in the same way as everyone else because I was the mod. ):

[identity profile] jukeboxhound.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
...Is there something wrong with choosing not to be anon on a meme? I figured the option was there so that a prompter or filler couldn't be traced/humiliated/etc if they didn't attach their name, particularly if the prompt or fill isn't exactly 'mainstream,' but that ultimately it was up to the individual.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's always been my thought too. But apparently there are some people who hate people posting un-anon on memes.

[identity profile] filthy-animal.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I wonder about this too o_o It's just an option.

I guess people prefer anon commenting so that the writer cannot come back and delete their prompts/fills.

[identity profile] rocks-not-dead.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
For me the animosity towards non-anon posting on kink memes actually comes from something completely different. it's not the prompting, it's the fills. I just think if most people anon and a select few don't and get away with it, it gives them an unfair visibility and status.

I went through a km of one of my fandoms recently to hunt for prompts and it was perfectly clear: everyone who doesn't anon and who no one ever says anything to about it? All the BNFs. The whole list.

I think a kink meme is the one place in fandom where it can be accomplished that fics get read and get comments for people just liking the fic, the content or the style, or whatever. Not due to who wrote them.

For me I prefer people to post logged in, so if they abandon their fic I know where to find them to see what's what. With an anon author and an abandoned fic there's just never any closure and you can't track them down and beg them for more.

I've seen other fandom secrets where people think you're an attention whore if you're not anon and that you're full of yourself. I have a sock journal just for TRACKING my prompts on memes but I don't use said sock to do fills (I hate my writing). Then I hear "well get a paid account." Not everyone can afford that when there are other things they are paying for too.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with posting fills unanon, but I side-eye people who make requests signed in. I'm sure it isn't true of all signed-in requesters, but it always makes me think the person is hoping to use their standing in the fandom to up their chances of having their request written, and that really rubs me the wrong way, for some reason.

I'll also admit to thinking it's annoying when someone namefags all over a kink meme just to second things and comment on things, and they second or comment on almost everything.

This, especially since a lot of the times I think people want their fic in their journal or something traced to them, instead of filling it anon. Most memes I've been to choosing to be anon is optional and hasn't been an issue.

[identity profile] filthy-animal.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Just clarifying that I didn't make this secret. x_x (Colors are Megamind colors so... lolyeah.)

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, that should be a crayon color, Megamind Blue.

this reminds me of modrants

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a secret similar to this but wished there was a place where mods could rant about members w/out them seeing. LJ does have some comms for this but they are inactive.

http://mod-rant.livejournal.com/profile
http://modsupport.livejournal.com/profile
http://modrants.livejournal.com/profile

I wanted to start a new one (I don't think mod_rants is taken) but I doubt people would use it. :/

Re: this reminds me of modrants

[identity profile] rocks-not-dead.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think the real issue really is that it would have to be anonymous so members of the respective comms couldn't see it. that would kinda defeat the object of having somewhere to feel comfortable to rant.

I run a kink meme and I would TOTALLY use such a community if you made a new one!
I agree with the idea that you should be approved to join, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP.
Additionally running the kink meme makes me feel so detached from the fandom. It's harder to interact with people, even when I go anon.

anon fandom anything, comm rant meme

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, modding can definitely do that. I'm honestly glad that I don't have to deal with any crap like that where I'm currently a staff member.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm super thankful to the mods of the BBC Sherlock kinkmeme. (http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/) They've done a fantastic job of keeping down the wank (or at least shunted off to the designated wanking corner) and they have been wonderfully responsive to suggestions to make the place better. They are sensitive without being overbearing, and they never, ever kink shame.

I think a lot of the reason that meme has flourished and gotten so unbelievably huge (I don't know of any meme bigger than it) is because of the job that they've done.

If you are one of those mods, I really hope you realize that your efforts are appreciated.
