Dean is not "mostly straight". Dean is firmly hetero. He's become visibly upset by encounters with, and even the mention of homosexuality. I love the guy, but he's really enough of an asshole about being gay that it's clearly not his thing.

And that could be because he is straight, or it could be just because he was raised to be a macho man and to think being gay (or bi) was wrong. There is such a thing as internalized homophobia, and men are taught to think that being gay (which is assumed to make them more feminine) makes them weaker and is a bad thing. Dean could be read as straight, but he could also be read as a bi or gay man who was in denial.

I really doubt that the show put that much thought into his psyche. I'm bi and trans, and he really doesn't strike me as someone who's anything but genuinely uncomfortable with people who don't fit his mold.

I don't care if people read Dean as 100% straight or whatever, but your argument doesn't really hold up. Tons of people who get really upset about homosexuality are actually repressed and closeted. How many politicians who are vocally against gay marriage have been caught in gay scandals? It's not just a coincidence.

To draw attention away from themselves, yes. To make it obvious that there's no way you'd catch them in a compromising position with a member of the same sex, because that is BAD and WRONG and LET ME TELL YOU. So if any rumors start up, they can be nipped in the bud because they said specifically they don't swing that way.

But that's not the case with Dean, because Dean actually does not pursue romance with other men and if he did, because he's joined at the hip with Sam, there's no way it would have remained a secret this long.

Not pursuing romance or sexual encounters with men is not the same as being definitively straight. The fact that I don't seek relationships with men does not mean that I'm heterosexual, it means I'm in the closet, and let me tell you, if you're nice and cosy in your closet then you're quite happy to stay in there and not engage in any behaviour that has the slightest chance of outing you.

I prefer my SPN with angsty unrequited confused angel love on Cas' side and angsty bro love on Dean's, because I see Dean as straight and Cas as oblivious, but it doesn't mean that I can't see that the subtext can easily be read as D/C.

I've seen it, thank you. That whole episode was so deliberately over the top meta, and it was ONE instance among many in which he's presented as nothing but straight, that it really doesn't count.

To be fair, it was Gabriel making Sam a car and the boys play CSI. Dean was fanboying all on his own.

While you are right that there has been only one non-subtext hint that Dean might not be straight, I doubt he's a Kinsey 0 (he strikes me more as a 1 or a very subdued 2).

'Interest' as in he said 'i wanna hit that?' he hasn't. But your assertion that he expresses some kind of extreme revulsion at the thought of homosexuality - or has an extreme reaction to it - is simply untrue.

When the realtors in 'Bugs' assume he and Sam are a couple, he reacts in surprise because they are, you know, *brothers*. But when realtor number two makes the same assumption he...slaps Sam's ass and calls him 'honey'.

He wonders why people assume they're gay in the episode with the haunted hotel but he doesn't kick up much of a fuss about it, and he certainly doesn't make any big deal out of when Crowley and others intimate that he and Castiel are a couple or that Castiel is 'in love' with him.

When the cosplayers turn out to be a gay couple, he's a little take aback because they're, you know, playing him and Sam. Who are *brothers*. And Show has made it quite clear that neither Sam nor Dean are interested in incest.

So, no - there is not in-your-face 'Dean loves cock!' moments on Show, but he's never once reacted in a way that would make me think he's so straight that the thought never occurred to him. He's made 'you're not my type' jokes more than once, and he's adventurous enough - and open enough - to try on women's underwear and enjoy it.

So quite frankly, your rather strident defense of him as 100 percent straight seems a bit over the top and lacking in any real support other than you really, really, really seem to want him to be straight.

On the contrary, I would love for him to be into cock (and most of my fanfic represents that), but I just do not see it as an option for him based on the way he's been seen to react in canon. So, frankly, all the people here determined to read him as anything but straight seems a bit like you just really want him to be bi.
