Hedwig might have been a minor character in the books, but that doesn't mean she was a minor part of Harry's life. She was the only one he had during the Summer holidays, the only one who loved him when nobody else did. Yes, Harry had some awesome friends, but Hedwig wasn't competing against them. She was ONE of them.
I think that warrants at least a slight amount of sadness, regardless of whether you are an animal person or not. It just comes off as incredibly douchey to not care at all.
