My mp3 player is probably about as random considering it can go from metal to trance to something like Il Divo or Sarah McLachlan to any variety of non-English music to movie soundtracks and so on and so forth. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about your psyche at all.

I don't really have advice for telling or not telling your friends, though. If they're the kind of friends who'd stop being your friend over your music tastes... I don't know. Hang in there. ♥

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, you should see my MP3 playlist if you think liking a mere two 'opposing' genres is weird. I used to be like you, but I stopped worrying after the age of about fifteen.

There's nothing wrong with or weird about being musically eclectic. c=

[identity profile] shazz-chan.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes you can, OP! My ipod is the same. From UKISS to Behemoth to Huecco to Stromae..It's all music it's all good! If they are your friends they shouldn't even care about that really :)

Alors On Danse!

[identity profile] jewelia13.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. I've got Dal*Shabet, Chi Chi, SNSD, Miss A, After School 2NE1... and then stuff like Nightwish, Kamelot, Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, etc. I've also got Stromae, Manu Chao, Alizee, Piotr Rubik, Destiny's Child, Sarah Brightman, Nicki Minaj, Sex Pistols, Morrissey, The Smiths, The Birthday Massacre... Personally, I have more respect for people who listen to a lot of genres instead of getting pigeonholed.

You need better/more accepting friends.
My metal friends know about all of my horrible musical tastes, and all of them have equally embarrassing bands/genres that they like too. We'll poke fun at each other for certain things, but in the end no one gives much of a fuck regarding whether you listen to metal and kpop or just metal alone.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
This used to be me at age 15. Well with dance music versus metal/rock. Fortunately, I grew out of it. So did my friends.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be kind of awkward and shifty about my mp3 player going straight from Rammstein to Kander & Ebb musicals... then I realized that

1. There are people with far weirder spreads of musical taste, and when it's someone else and Self-Deprecating Mode is not engaged, it looks super edgy and interesting
2. Anyone who thinks Cabaret is light 'n' fluffy pansy shit either hasn't heard any of it in context, or isn't worth my time
3. Anyone who thinks Mutter is brainless shock-jock crap either doesn't speak a lick of German, or isn't worth my time
4. Talking about different things when you're with different people isn't being a poser, it's bonding over mutual interests--hell, playing with different dress codes to suit the occasion is fine too as long as it's clothes you like
5. ...that said, black lacy skirts + combat boots go with everything.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
1) There are at least two other people whose music goes from Rammstein to Cabaret: both myself and my younger brother (and the two of us have fairly different taste outside of a handful of overlapping interests)
4) It is also being a decent conversationalist. Talking about the same things all the time regardless of whether or not the other party is interested--while I have done it--shows bad conversation skills.
5) I am convinced combat boots do go with almost everything

[identity profile] sapphirecrow.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I have classical piano vs. rock-style foreign musical theatre.

And I tell everyone this and they're all like, "wtf" but... they're not crazy and they don't disown me because I like different stuff than they do. Try not to beat yourself up about it? I really don't think they'd react as badly as you imagine, considering you made an anon secret to vent out your feelings. :S

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Is this the new punks vs. mods thing?
ext_1329685: Image of Donald Glover grinning and wearing glasses. (big bang - this shit is bananas!)

[identity profile] cherrycoloured.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty normal to have really varied musical interests. I listen to a lot of K-Pop as well, but I also love rock, indie, and rap music too, and various sorts of foreign and domestic pop. Oddly enough, one of my favorite J-Pop bloggers' concept is about his favorite types of music are Japanese idol pop and metal. xD

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with dressing differently based on your mood and your group. It's called adapting. Appearance is a costume, and so long as you are being true to yourself then it doesn't matter how many different ways you dress yourself.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the disconnect isn't that big. There's a blogger in the JPop fandom who writes about metal and JPop girl groups. Pop and metal are not mutually exclusive, and anyone who says you have to like one genre of music only is just ridiculous.

[identity profile] sairei.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not as awkward when Vocaloid pops up during shuffle while with friends.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Variety is the spice of life -- sorry your friends don't understand that.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel like needing to hide with this. Having varied tastes in music is relatively normal. My iPod can go from classical music to jpop to kpop to Lady Gaga to the Wicked OST to the Wicked OST in German to some other musicals to Hungarian pop to Mongolian overtone singing to German pop to various other foreign languages, dance music in various subgenres to a Ke$ha a song to Pat Benatar to I don't even know what else. None of my friends judge me for it. Not even for my guilty pleasure music. Hopefully your friends wouldn't judge you for your "opposing" tastes either. Who knows, you may even have other closet kpop fans in your metal group, or closet metal fans in your kpop group.

[identity profile] juukenshimimiru.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's pretty stupid. :/ Most of my friends like a huge mix of music, and anyone who shuns you for what you like isn't worth associating with anyway. Why does it have to be one or the other?

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Get new friends. Seriously if it's that bad then you need to be around people that will accept all your musical tastes.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with having an eclectic collection - joining the chorus in saying that I have a wide variety of stuff on my iPod. Honestly, there's no reason to limit yourself to one or the other if you like both. If your friends judge you for it, fuck 'em. Does it really matter that much that you like Korean pop and metal? Both are awesome genres, so just embrace that you have a wide variety of tastes! :D

[identity profile] dentedsky.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
mmm yayaya same sort of, but I'm more 25% soft core metal, 25% new age, 25% kpop and 25% everything else.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I have 28 different genres of music on my iPod, and that's AFTER the lengthy arguments I have with iTunes about where to file all my metal (if it has a male vocalist, it goes in "Metal", if it has a lady vocalist, it goes in "Gothic". There is no other difference). These include New Age, Folk, Industrial and Children's (containing exactly two Lazy Town songs...). And none of my friends have ostracised me for my terrible tastes. Don't be ashamed, Anon!

[identity profile] blitzs-fighters.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm seriously into black metal, among other metal genres, and I've always felt a bit awkward about my love for folk etc. But actually after I started to admit it (to both sides) I've never had more than people asking me why, and people have never had problems with the answers.

Hey, at least it's not nu-metal or something-core...

I really think people worry too much about what others think of their musical tastes.

In my experience, outside of the dysfunctional, derpy "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE" mentality some shut-ins of fandom can have, most people do not give that much of a shit about musical taste.

Especially when you already have some musical common ground with that person.

My two favorite genres are German metal and stuff like Passion Pit/MGMT, etc. Those two fandoms do not mix really but I've never had one from one side judge me for liking the other.

In fact, my group has had people come out and admit liking Insane Clown Posse and while we all gave them a tiny bit of shit for it, we didn't like.. ostracize them or anything like that.

[identity profile] chetanlaiho.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha we should talk xD But most of the people I hang out with now I'm weird and full of opposites.

It's my guilty pleasure basically. K-pop represents everything I hate in 'popular music' (bands put together by companies, songs written for them, only made for commercial motives etc.) but I frikking love it xD
