I've always felt bad for Team Rocket. Like the first commenter, I just wanna have them over for dinner, hug them, be their friend, etc. I always wondered why the heck they worked for Giovanni if they weren't good at what they did and always fucked up...was there a reason they didn't just move on to something else?

I kind of always figured Team Rocket was like a mafia sort of thing. Once youre in, its your ass if you try to leave.

Or maybe thats just my headcanon.

Jessie's in Team Rocket because her mother (Miyamoto) used to work for Giovanni's mother ("Madame Boss") and was one of her top agents.

Jessie was orphaned when her mum went on a mission to search for Mew and was lost in an avalanche. She may still be alive but her whole plot was discarded after the first movie....I don't believe her dad's ever been discussed.

Presumably, Jessie was allowed to follow in her mother's footsteps because Miyamoto was simply that good of an agent that Jessie's numerous failures aren't a huge issue to them. It's the only reason why I can think that she's allowed to stay despite their numerous failures!

Team Rocket backstory is really interesting, they were my favourites of the whole show...far more interesting than any of the other characters.... :P

In Sinnoh they run across a guy they trained with when they were grunts who had quit the team, but he quit when he was still small potatoes so it may be different for higher-ups.

I think at some point they must have been good at what they did, since they were wanted villains in the beginning of the show. Then they got obsessed with Pikachu and the whole thing went south.

(Though I also agree that you can't just leave Team Rocket.)
