I agree about how Tumblr kind of makes a mess of the fandom experience just in general, but I also think, anon, that you might be overestimating the overall popularity of Tiger and Bunny. I'm a big fan but it still seems like a larger-sized niche fandom to me.

There are quite a few really dedicated fans but it's not some kind of big cultural anime watershed fandom or anything. It might become that eventually, if this season doesn't end up a total disaster of >:Fail and if the second season is at all good, but give it time. Niche fandoms take a while to grow and will never garner the support of other bigger anime fandoms, like how big FMA fandom used to be in its heyday.

IA. I don't think the problem is Tumblr, it's just not a very big and productive fandom.

Are you talking about the online fandom on the west? Because it's apparent that it's very popular in Japan. I mean, Christ, they're showing the final episode in theatres all over the country and having a special event, and that doesn't usually happen for any show, let alone a six month old series.

Yes I am. I'm aware that it's very popular in Japan, but Japanese fandom and Western fandom tend to be completely unrelated phenomenon... it's rare for there to be an anime fandom where the Japanese fans and the fans from the US/Europe/any-Western-nation interact in any significant way.

T&B fandom is quite large in Japan, as is evidenced not only by the in-theater event but also by the shitload of doujins that have been produced for this series. Hell, T&B even got a shout out in the most recent chapter of Genshiken.

But outside Japan? Not really so much.

I think the semi-interaction of English speaking fans and Japanese fans is probably why the English speaking fandom seems like it's huge and should be more active on LJ.

The T&B fandom in Japan (finally lost some holds on the illustration/manga rankings due to UtaPuri but still dominating in the novels/fanfics rankings in pixiv) is probably four or five times the size of the T&B English speaking fandom and Tumblr leeches off of pixiv. There's just way more material coming from Japan which keeps tumblr's T&B tag busy at all times which ends up making the T&B fandom in the English speaking world seem bigger than it really is.

I'm not really sure if this "Japan posts stuff, tumblr reposts" stuff counts as a proper interaction though. It's more like an one-sided interaction in a way.

That's interesting. I confess, I'm not a follower of T&B, but I was under the strong impression it was the It Thing of the moment. Over the summer almost every anime fan I know got into it, and I have a big flist.
