Y'know, a lot of people say Japan is racist due to the country's isolation. But as someone who has lived in the US, Japan and Australia throughout various stages of my life, I didn't really notice a difference in the levels of racism. The type of racism itself is different, but considering the US and Australia both toute themselves as fairly multicultural countries, their racism is too pretty widespread, particularly in the media.

This this this, but only Germany, United States and Japan instead.

LOOK there are people who hate other people in every country, and there are people who will love you for who you are in every country, too. NO country is perfect and all of the comments demonizing Japan above are pretty disheartening.

Living long term in Japan half of my life and dating the same Japanese guy for the past 8 years... have only had outright racism happen to me a handful of times. I wouldn't continue to live her if every day was a literal shit-fest.

The people who felt so isolated while in Japan... do you speak the language? Do you understand that you cannot just go up to people and talk to them once and expect them to be your BFF? :-/ I always find it so hard to believe that people get treated so badly here.

But but but demonising Japan is cool! If you don't you are a weeeaboo!

I actually found Australia to be really, really welcoming compared to New Zealand. I do get various curious questions, which are not malicious in any ways. The number of times that I've been attacked because of my race? Twenty months in and it still hasn't happened.

What I did notice though is how unbelievably white the Australian media is.

(Then again, Australian's history with Aboriginal people, as well as the refugee situation. I'm just going t :( face forever about that)

Different Anon

Maybe this is just because I've lived in Australia all my life, but the racism here can be pretty disgusting. A lot of it comes down to Australian "humor" - apparently you can say ANYTHING offensive, as long as you back it up with "don't take it seriously! It was just a joke!" which is an attitude that seriously pisses me off. Making jokes about "niggers" an "chinks", then backing it up with "don't be an idiot. I was only joking!" isn't excusable. But so many people seem to thik it's fine. >_>

Then there's the media channels that decide to pick on certain races every now and then by "scaring" the public into thinking we're being overtaken by non whites. First it was the Middle Easterners, then it was the "Asian Invasion", then it was the "Wog invasion", then it was the "Sudanese takeover", and now it's the "country being overrun by 'boat people'".
Ugh the "boat people". Nope, the media doesn't call them refugees. Hell, the prime minister herself doesn't call them refugees. They're just "boat people". The pure hatred Australia has for non white refugees is repulsive. If you're white? No problem! Just get a Visa and away you go. But if you're a "boat person" from a primarily non white country? "Go back to where you came from, you filthy towel headed terrorist!" Ugh.

Okay you know what anon? I actually get you. I get what you mean, and I found this "boat people" thing deeply upsetting myself.

A huge part of what I wrote was based on personal anecdote. In Australia I do see systemic racism like what you listed, as well as jokish cop out "lol niggers but don't take it serious ha" too. It just personally it's an improvement for me as so far I have not been made to genuinely believe that I am a lesser human being, or that I did something wrong to deserve to be a "lesser" race, nor that I have truly felt unsafe because of my race yet.

It is also refreshing to see that people would actually get upset when accused of being racist, as in opposite of the "OF FUCKING COURSE I'M RACIST, THAT MAKES ME MORALLY SUPERIOR YE FUCKING CUNT" attitude that I used to see a lot.

I'm Australian too and this hasn't really been my experience, though. I have heard of this kind of thing happening, but perhaps I'm watching different tv channels or circulating in different communities to you or perhaps I'm just naive but your comment sounds kinda exaggerated.

Mind you, I watch the Chaser and they do make fun of Austalian idiots being idiotic in the way you described, so, idk, we're not all like that I guess?

That's nice to hear. I find Aussie media really white too if I'm watching Channel Nine, but there are Aussie programs on SBS that aren't, and I know Home and Away had some token characters chucked in there, which isn't ideal but it's a step.

As someone who has lived here all their life I find that with our history with Aboriginal people is like - we're either really bloody embarrased OR we have our head in the sand about it and are quite defensive when questioned on the subject.

The refugee situation - I - yeah =( and =/ I can't believe how backwards some people think especially after I moved from Labor-supported Canberra to Liberal-supported Perth.
