There is a prevalent but small group of anti-foreigner activists in Japan (I forgot their name), and I'm betting they're the ones who are staging these protests. I saw one of their protests once, and a lot of the locals around me were embarassed because I and a few other whities had witnessed it.

Anyway, I wouldn't say Japan is completely accepting of foreigners, but their attitudes are changing gradually. While I lived there, I met a lot of locals who were internationally minded and didn't treat me like an outsider. And Korean language/culture is popular with a lot of young people.

Do you live in Japan? Because otherwise I can't see why you'd need them to accept you.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
People the Japanese accept: other Japanese

People the Japanese will not accept, but will like reasonably well: skinny white people

People the Japanese generally dislike: other Asians, Hispanics

People the Japanese hate: black people

At least you're not at the bottom of the list?

There's all types in Japan, you know. I know a lot of young women who are totally gaga for K-pop idols and studying Korean and the whole nine yards but there's also a lot of old conservative racist stogers. Among young people I think people are more receptive than not, though.

If you want to go to Japan you have to accept the mixed bag. And honestly no foreigners are going to get fully "accepted" into Japan in the near future. They'll always see you as an outsider. And that goes for anyone who isn't 100% born and raised and ethnically Japanese. If you can handle that, though, you can still live well there and make lots of friends.

[identity profile] torakaka.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I love Japan and their culture, but this is the very reason I would never want to live there long term.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I lived in Japan for quite some time and never faced any outright hatred or malice. There was a lot of awkwardness, sure. But I think a lot of this "foreign hate" comes from a lack of understanding and a "freak out" that many Japanese people have when they are confronted with foreigners. Japanese Pride might sound like an outdated concet but it is still very relevant. Many Japanese people don't want to be made a fool of in front of others, and not being able to speak the appropriate language towards a foreigner embarasses many of them. So they come off as rude or aloof towards foreigners, instead of risking being made a fool of.

I think the worse I came across was when a landlord was unsure as to whether he wanted to let me rent his apartment or not because my "foreigness" might clash with the other tenants. But I explained that I could speak Japanese and that he was under no obligation to let me stay there if he truly was uncomfortable with it, so he ended up letting me live there and we are now quite close friends.

But apart from that, I think every foreigner should just accept that sadly, not everybody is going to accept them (not just in Japan, but in EVERY country). There are still many racists out there, but the vast majority of people ARE good people who do not harbor such thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
:(

But you know, while that may look like a lot of people, I think it's really not. There are millions of people in Japan. :) I have faith that most of them don't feel that way, and find the situation just as sad as you do.

To me that just looks like a very vocal minority. There are people like that in every country sadly.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ngl but from my experience with teaching English in some Asian countries as a non-asian person, Asian countries are still really xenophobic in general. I would actually say that I've had more trouble in Korea than in Japan. I was actually treated better in SE asian countries..

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's actually quite sad. But I think there is at least some movement there. At least there are some Japanese idols who said that they like kpop, and since they do have some kind of rolemodel function...

About the comment that Japanese people hate foreigners: I think there is something true in this, at least in the Japanese society they are unsure about people who are not from Japan. Some may be really racist, others are afraid of them.

But I think that's also a generation thing. Young people seem to be a bit more tolerant than older people. So yes, I do have some hope.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, OP.

From my understanding this is a very small group of people. Someone got fired from their job because they made racist/anti-Korean statements on their twitter (a celebrity). For the most part, Korean culture is being welcomed with open arms, especially given the sales of groups like SNSD and KARA. Hell, TVXQ is performing the last performance at A-Nation, which is huge.

Attitudes are changing, and I do think that the Hallyu wave is a part of that. There will be some racists and some people who are close-minded, but those protesters are not the average person.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, Japan is one of the most cultrally isolated country, South Korea is bad too but not nearly as bad. Whereas places like Hong Kong and Singapore is very receptive of other culture. I think you picked the wrong country to integrate into.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hi. A Japanese here checking in to say we don't all hate you, honestly. Korean stuff *is* actually very popular.
But you are right that this is a developing problem. Like people above are saying, most of the anti-Korean stuff comes from a very small minority of right-wing racists who should just be ignored, but there is a danger that their thinking can spill into the mainstream. They always frame the issue as an "us VS them" thing, and young people in particular are receptive to that (e.g. about how TV supposedly prioritises Kim Yuna over Asada Mao etc). Kids generally don't like to be told what to like. It could become "cool" to hate Korea or something. But I think chances of that are slim since the current situation is really just a kick-back response to hanryu being so overpoweringly popular. Sort of like Justin Beiber in the US.

Y'know, a lot of people say Japan is racist due to the country's isolation. But as someone who has lived in the US, Japan and Australia throughout various stages of my life, I didn't really notice a difference in the levels of racism. The type of racism itself is different, but considering the US and Australia both toute themselves as fairly multicultural countries, their racism is too pretty widespread, particularly in the media.

I've never heard of this at all anon. Where I live, K-Dramas are very popular and even foreign culture is on the rise. Unfortunately, there are always anti-foreigner people everywhere, but don't worry. Change is slow but it's definitely happening.

If you identify with Japan and you see it as your second home, don't let the assholes drive you out.

Has it also got something to do with the Hallyu wave been very consumer-based and about 1000% more expensive in JP than SK?

I love Tohoshinki but bloody hell, the difference in price between their Korean album and Japanese album is startling. Mind you, it may have more to do with how the profits are distributed.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, as someone who lives part-time between Japan, Hong Kong and US, I have to tell you that if you're a foreigner, you'll never be 100% accepted no matter where you are in the world.

Granted, the people who are protesting are just a small group of extreme-right-wingists (like the American Tea Party,) or internet trolls. They are not the majority. Since I'm Chinese and I work for a Japanese company with a branch in the US, I face racism and sexism whenever I go to work in Japan. At the same time, while I know Chinese, and grew up mostly in HK, whenever I get send to HK/China/Taiwan for work, I'm seen as a foreigner because of my native-level English. At the same time, when I'm in America and working with potential US companies, I'm seen as a foreigner and they tend to act hesitant around me even though I'm American.

The people who posts these news on the internet in English are mostly trolls too, so you don't need to pay them any mind. My Japanese friends all love Kara and SNSD. Japanese companies recognize that if they don't try to work on an international level, they're going to get out competed by other countries. In this era of internationalization, it would be foolish of them to not accept foreign culture (which they've done since the beginning of Japanese history.)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you can look at it this way. 6,000 people are protesting. However, they are protesting because there appears to be a great amount of Korean media products on Japanese television, indicating that demand for them is high. Their popularity among Fuji TV viewers likely means there is a Japanese fan base greatly outnumbering the naysayers.

Age probably factors into this. I would bet anything a large number of the protesters are from an older generation. It's the younger generation that forms the consumer base for K-media.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
what? But I thought they loved k-pop stars? D:

[identity profile] chetanlaiho.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet all I could think about when reading that article was 'Wasn't SHINee supposed to have their Japanese Debut recently?' ^^;

I'd love to read the full article (assuming that's what it is) if anyone has it.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As a fellow Korean, I find you pathetic and weeaboo for lamenting the fact that you won't be accepted by another group of people based on your culture. It's not even the whole Korean/Japanese conflict thing, I'm actually very against the whole conflict however it pisses me off when people can't accept their culture---MY CULTURE, just because another group of people won't like them. Deal with it, suck my kimchi bitch.
