You're not going to get that far as a neuropharmacologist if you can't tell the difference between "soul" and "sole". Even scientists need to write up reports and shit.

Just saying.

[identity profile] loveypuppy.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they meant it like "the purpose OF MY SOUL!"
IDK

Do you realize you are working in the exact opposite direction of natural selection?
What you will do in your job is find ways to prolong the lives of people who would not survive without modern society.

I'd be fucking dead without modern medicine. Yor're keeping useless genetic traits like mine in the gene pool. No natural selection anywhere in sight.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
This. Exactly this.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Natural selection is a force that is always at work, like gravity. Saying there's no natural selection at work because as a species we're getting very good at keeping ourselves alive is like saying "gravity is not at work on me right now because I'm not falling."

what is even going on in this secret

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you didn't major in genetics, as natural selection doesn't work like that. It doesn't leave the survivors "stronger" or "better." Natural selection works when some members of a species have more viable offspring than others, meaning that their genes become more common in the gene pool. These genes don't necessarily make for "stronger" or "better" offspring, especially since conditions in an environment can change randomly and favor other genes than the ones that were previously favored. Also, the survivors wouldn't be stronger, they wouldn't change at all. Evolution works over generations, it doesn't affect individuals.

(And yes, I am a nerd who can't let stuff like this go)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
thank you for being a nerd and pointing it out. It bothered me too.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
This was bothering the shit out of me too, thank you. "Natural selection" is not the same as "the forward progress of a species" but so many people use it that way.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
loooooooooooooooooooooool someone working in modern medicine supporting "natural selection"

Personally, if I had to work for any cartoonishly evil corporation, I'd choose Armacham. What about you folks?

Aren't neuropharmacists the ones who research the workings of the brain in order to develop treatments for Alzheimer's and shit?
Um

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's "sole". Not "soul". Sole. This misspelling infuriates me above all others and I don't get why.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the point is that if you start experimenting on humans it's no longer "natural" selection. Just saying.

[identity profile] rozola.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
wasn't it a point in RE5 that Wesker had completely lost his marbles by then? he was no longer the smart, useful scientist who worked in the shadows by manipulating others. he'd just gone batshit insane. that's why his "natural selection" shtick made no sense. he didn't want a race full of "stronger and better" humans. he just wanted to rule the world.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Go learn what natural selection is before you start supporting statements that sound really creepy.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. Wow. What.

Now that I'm done with that. Wouldn't that actually start to narrow the gene pool if you really did kill off all of those deemed "useless." You'd also have to wait thousands of years for any significant trait to become embedded in our genes anyways.

Also, pretty sure that the laws of genetics works in the way that "pretty person + pretty person = ugly person" more often than pretty person. So mating your two top candidates with awesome traits (attractiveness, strength, immunity...) will likely have less favorable results.

... Of course, this is just what I THINK I recall from high school biology. If anyone here has had advanced courses and can correct me (or elaborate on if I'm actually right) please do.

[identity profile] kaatsu.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
You have murdered the theory of natural selection and are wearing its bedraggled corpse as a hat. Learn yourself some fucking science before you start getting all high and mighty about the future of the human race.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
So basically you're an aspiring Evilutionary Biologist (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilutionaryBiologist)?

...good luck with that. Why don't you recruit some Nazis to help you out, I'm sure they'll be on board with that

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, considering how spectacularly you fail at science, I guess you'll be working for them as a bicycle courier. Fine with me, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-14 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I can recall, any attempt of mixing the concept of natural selection to science ended up pretty badly.
Oh, yeah, Hitler called. He's so fuckin' proud of you.

[identity profile] schizojenic.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I have the burning urge to point out that Wesker's Social Darwinism schtick is kind of silly considering that Social Darwinism fails to take into account things like economic and cultural divides in different societies.
