I think the problem with her and fandom is that she was a chick tbh.

Not to mini-rant, but I personally can't stand Lisa because it's so fucking obvious she should have been Cassie. Like, really? Dean is going to leave The Life to go try and be normal with Lisa, a weekend of Yoga sex? Cassie is the only girl he ever had real feelings for. It's like, come on, show, stop trying to force this other random chick down our throats when you told us Dean only ever really cared about Cassie. Sad her episode was so ridic though.

The premise itself isn't bad, but the idea that they can pull it off in one episode is ridiculous. Give us a series. Give us details and depth and character development. Give us peril and fear and tenderness and intimacy and then, at the end, when you tear them apart, your viewers might actually care.

(might)

This is a good comment and you should feel good.

ITA about Lisa. I think it would have made more sense for Dean to go to Cassie instead. I know the episode was pretty awful but that would have been great continuity. I don't hate Lisa, but the way she was set up, it just doesn't make sense to me that suddenly years later, she's who he thinks about when he pictures himself happy. The one weekend woman who I assume happened before Cassie. So, I guess all of these intense feelings for her only surfaced during The Kids Are Alright?

I just think they wanted to give him the whole package and rip it away from him. So, it was Lisa because she had a kid. (an incredibly obnoxious kid, IMO)

[identity profile] nexttwentylove.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I would have appreciated the continuity. My beffie was like, 'They couldn't give him Cassie, no one even remembers her!' I was like, ugh, you're the reason TV shows think they need to dumb themselves down. And you're right, they probably made it Lisa so with Ben, Dean's eventual loss would be worse, but he's better off without them, they're both so unnecessary. Agreed about obnoxious; that kind of behavior only works for Dean tbqh.

Also, your icon! Barely gave a fuck about Meg before that vessel, now she's one of my fav demons.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
My beffie was like, 'They couldn't give him Cassie, no one even remembers her!'

LOL, it's funny you say that because as soon as Lisa opened the door in 99 Problems, my first reaction was 'who? Oh, right. Her. Her? Really?'

This. Giving an 8 year old Dean traits is not cute and adorable to me, as I'm sure it was meant to be, it was silly. It was gimicky. I hate it when they try and make little kids into little Han Solos. It always gets on my nerves. And when he grew out of that, he grew into a brat.

Barely gave a fuck about Meg before that vessel, now she's one of my fav demons.

Me too!!! I didn't care about her one way or the other when she was played by Nicki, but once Rachel took over, I loved her. I wish she would show up more. I demand more Meg on my Supernatural. Easily my favorite girl on the show.

This to your second paragraph. The only character in canon that it was established that Dean had real feelings for was Cassie, I don't know why they tried to pull Lisa in as his true love out of thin air.

Dean probably wouldn't even have given Lisa a second thought if she didn't have a kid. I can buy that he likes what she represents (having the family he wants) but I have trouble buying that he has feelings for her.

OMG, this. Lisa was simply a representation. That's what really bugged me about this storyline. It wasn't about her, it was about what she represented.

I mean, I don't think she had five lines as herself in her last episode. That showed how little of a character she was. Ben was what was important in that episode. Lisa was a device.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think Dean's "feelings" for Lisa had less to do with Lisa and more to do with Ben. Dean wants a family, and with Lisa he could have that built-in family. He let himself fall for her or at least thing he had fallen for her because he wanted that. Cassie, as much as he had once loved her, didn't have a child, and there was so much water under the bridge between them that I don't think he would have gone near her again.

That said, I don't actually hate the episode with her in it. Yes, the possessed truck thing was kind of ridiculous, but no more so than a lot of the monster of the week episodes. And I actually liked Cassie.

[identity profile] franceismyhomie.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well I dunno; I always assumed Dean went to Lisa because he wanted to be that father figure to Ben, since they had so much in common and he didn't want Ben ending up like him. It just so happened that he didn't hate Lisa, so he was able to try and have a relationship with her as well. But I guess that's just an alternative view on the matter.

I always wondered what happened to Cassie. Perhaps the fact they always argued or something turned Dean off of the idea of returning to her? Or just bad writing on the writers' part - or perhaps the actress wasn't able to return for to play the role so they had to change things around. Oh God, now I'm just thinking too much on the matter xD

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything you said here.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
YES THIS. I wish they'd brought Cassie back.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought at this seeing this secret - No, she would have been shipped more if she'd been male.

Don't agree with your second paragraph, though, despite how much I like Cassie and Dean/Cassie. You're totally ignoring Dean and Lisa reconnecting in s3. By the end of the episode, Lisa wasn't just a bendy weekend anymore. She was a woman he liked (for more than just good sex) with a kid he liked and a life he was kind of wistful about being a part of. Also, Cassie was years ago in show terms, that declaration was years ago in show terms, and I don't believe she's going to be the only woman he ever loves. Besides, I absolutely believe that if Cassie were the one they brought back, fandom would have been complaining about her and saying it should have been someone else.

[identity profile] nexttwentylove.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not ignoring that. Dean had a ~reconnecting episode with both Cassie and Lisa. Cassie's, however poorly acted and executed the episode itself was as a whole, had me finishing it thinking, Oh, sad, Dean is/was seriously in love with this girl. By the end of Lisa's episode, it was clear Dean was wistfully contemplating the life he could have had/could maybe have someday, but from what I took out of it, that had nothing to do with Lisa herself or even Ben specifically. Dean wants a family and if he'd stayed when she'd offered the first time he's thinking maybe this is his chance, etc. etc., but show just didn't make Dean's sudden ~love for Lisa believable at all. The next random time she popped up, it was like, really though, this again? Even in season six, of course it's obvious Dean cared for both of them, but it wasn't so much Lisa and Ben I think he loved as it was the pre-made family package of normal he's always wanted. As far as the length of time, if Dean really loved Cassie like he said he did, then that wouldn't matter; his feelings don't have an expiration date. While I agree that Cassie won't be the only woman Dean ever truly loves, I'd have to say there has yet to be a contender for spot number two.

I do agree if it was Cassie, fandom would complain, they're going to complain about any canon het pairing, but in terms of legit possibilities for Dean from the pool of women already given to us, no one makes more sense than her.

But seriously, we'll just have to agree to disagree. A few months ago (on F!S in fact) I got into this insane week-long discussion with this dude over Castiel's merit to the show or something, I don't even remember, and ffs I only half-care about SPN at the moment anyway. Definitely not enough to keep throwing myself into these crazy long conversations, but it's like I'm physically incapable of replying.

But didn't Cassie basically say 'it could never work' at the end of that episode? She pretty much said 'goodbye' and that was that - why would Dean even consider going back to her?

I think he went to Lisa because after all those years, they both remembered each other fondly, and Dean suspected Ben was his, and they connected and were comfortable around each other. Lisa didn't run screaming when she found out that monsters were real and later, we saw how tolerant she was of salt on her windowsills and devil's traps under her rugs.... I think they just fit better, and Ben was like a Sam that Dean could raise up 'right', without all the hunting and fighting and hurting.
