ok seriously? 3 years ago? i read it like 5 years ago! I READ TWILIGHT BEFORE YOU DID I'M COOLER!!!!!

[identity profile] crownedapple.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? You think they'd bother making a movie out of that series without its massive fanbase?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
There was hate and bitching in the fandom before the movies, hon. It started when Eclipse came out and girls started calling Bella a slut for kissing Jacob even though he physically forced her the first time and manipulated her into it the second time by saying he would commit suicide. All anyone cared about was that she HURT EDWARD, despite the fact that by leaving her he almost got her killed by psycho vampires still wandering around, and then basically signed her death sentence by showing her to the Volturi.

After that Breaking Dawn came out, and the fandom imploded from the inside out. (Do I need to recap the events of BD to explain why?) You must have been in a safe part that is only now deteriorating.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I saw more bitching about how Jacob manipulated her.

That was also around the time someone asked her the epic question about what Edward did when Bella was on her period...

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Where were you at the time? I was on the Twilight Lexicon, and that's how it was there; I can't speak for anywhere else. Funnily enough, there *was* just as much bitching about Jake manipulating her there as well, and calling Bella a slut at the same time.

Actually, as I recall the period question was asked much much earlier. It's answered in one of the first "Personal Correspondances" on the Twilight Lexicon.

(Man, I was into it HARDCORE before I realized what a shitfest that series was.)

And her answer was...?

[identity profile] tarantye-no.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
So... I think I have to explain. I'm from Germany and as you may know it takes some time till books like this get translated in german. So I was like -really- late and I only can speak from the german fanbase (maybe I should have write that, I'm sorry.)
To this time when the german trailer was released nobody was really interested in the series and I was kind of happy about it, cause I liked the story. The "war" started when the movie came out. Till then everybody already hated Jacob (what I... really can't understand) and everyone loved Edward (what I also can't understand) and yeah... You know what I mean?

+ I'm not really part of the international fandom you know? I dunno, I'm not interested in it. I read it and go in the cinema and watch the fandom from the outside, cause it's kind of too crazy for me to join.

I thought the books were overexposed well-known long before any of the movies came out.

[identity profile] ratsandwich.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
It was only really after Eclipse (the book) came out that the popularity soared. I read them a while before the huge boom; I remember searching Deviantart for pictures of Edward and coming up with like, nothing. It's kinda funny.

And then of course, the haters and bashers came with the boom as well. It wasn't noticed until the fanbase exploded, honestly, and then people started screaming that it was tripe. I have to say I enjoyed the books when I first read them (of course, I know better now), but they're a guilty pleasure for me. Except the fourth one never happened.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
No, the books were a big deal back when I read them before the movie 5 years ago. Yes, the movies gave the series more exposure, that's what movies do, but the fandom wasn't the close-knit hipster utopia you're thinking it was.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
someone did not seriously make an early fandom rulz!1!1 I was there b4 it existed!!11 secret for twilight. I can't, too easy.

1 thing tho op ur late sry2say. The fact that the first trailer existed means that the book was already big at the time, get it?

These were exactly my thoughts after reading the secret. Thanks for expressing them for me.

I left this fandom after the release of the first film, and then I ran like mad from it after Breaking Dawn (that book was such a pile of puke). I gave my books away 3 years ago, and have never looked back since. Sometimes, however, I do miss the old fandom of 2007. Ahh, remember the Dream Team? Good times!

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
You seriously think the movies are the only thing wrong with Twilight? And you read the books?

I agree with you though. I too wished this dreck had remained small and burried. Stalker creepiness and kiddie porn don't belong in the spotlight.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason "so much hate and bitching came into the fandom" when the movies were released was people seeing the relationships in Twilight being marketed as romantic and 'the ideal' and reacting in justifiable horror. Books do get a certain amount of publicity and advertising, but it's nothing compared to what a big-budget Hollywood film gets, so more people became aware of the existence of the books. When any book is adapted into a film or tv show, there's a surge of interest in the books, and it's always divided - some people enjoy the books, some people don't. That happened with Twilight, but the people who didn't like the books had some extremely valid points as to why they didn't like it (talking about the 'romance' and the messages the books create, rather than the quality of writing) and at the same time the media was pushing Edward/Bella as some sort of universal OTP, the newest Perfect Pairing. So many people finding a relationship disturbing and unhealthy only to see it being portrayed as positive probably found their breaking point and came online to express their frustrations.

[identity profile] runriverblue.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Um...yeah. Twilight fandom was pretty huge before the movies, hence why they even made the movies at all. Fandom was fairly small with the first two books, then it started really growing around the time the third book was released. The movies definitely made the fandom bigger, but it was big before the movies were even thought about.

[identity profile] tarantye-no.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm german. So I can only say it from my country. I should have write that I'm sorry. The boom only started here because it became a movie. I seriously never met a Twilight-fan in Germany before it. :/
It takes some time in Germany till a fandom is big enough to be recognized compared with America... I think.
So when the movie came out everything exploded and the war started.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Just a few knew it? I read it a good 5-6 years ago (I remember because it was during my sophomore year of high school and now I'm a junior in college) and it was trendy then. :/

The books obsessive fans and haters have been around for a LONG time, before the movies existed. Besides, if only a few people liked a book, they wouldn't make a movie out of it.

[identity profile] tarantye-no.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 10:12 am (UTC)(link)

The books were pretty much hated before the movie. I remember seeing people practically rip patches off their hair in frustration at the movie's announcement me included

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I read it 4-5 years ago... and it was pretty big at that point, I thought. Not nearly the monster it is now, but I saw people reading it all over the place. I mean, people didn't know who the fuck Edward Cullen was unless they'd read the books, but it was pretty widespread.

At the same time, I agree that the films did this fandom no favours. But that's partly because I wish those films were never made because they're terrible.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not alone, OP. I wasn't there from the very beginning and I rarely am in such matters. I did manage to get in just before the movies. I read them just as the 3rd book was being released that fall and Stephenie Meyer had been hinting about a movie being in the talks. A lot of people were giving opinions on what actors they'd like to see cast (none of which included "RPatz"). There were some crazy fans, but a lot of discussion centered around the books and people who liked them. Now I hear more negative critiques about it. I know it's far from perfect, but I never took it serious and it was a mindless quick entertaining read. I don't have the highest respect for Meyer, but I did appreciate how involved she was with her fans and answering questions about the series. It's been awhile since I looked at the community, but I doubt she does that anymore.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this is what you mean but Twilight fandom was already pretty reviled before the film came out.
Just sayin'.
