Are the books the same as the movies? Because the only people I know who like him don't like the movie versions. (Haven't read, haven't watched, but librarian...)

[identity profile] aachren.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
If you wanted/needed proof that this is true.
Here it is. ()

Not my cup of tea, either.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Er... isn't that the plot of most movies in that genre?

[identity profile] pellnell.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Do people with taste actually enjoy his work in an unironic way? I feel like he's kind of the butt of jokes in the literary world, like the Thomas Kinkade of books.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I might be digging around for that "it's okay to not like things but don't be a dick about it" video had it not been for the last "forced to watch" part. Being nice about stuff you don't like is an idea typically founded on the assumption that people don't force you to read/watch/participate in addition to consideration for others not enjoying the feeling of having their parades rained on. I'm sorry you were forced. I'm still bitter about being forced to watch Runaway Bride back when that came out.
Also I agree that Nicholas Sparks' works are ridiculously similar to each other. Which is hilarious considering his large ego about his own works.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read this, anon: http://www.cracked.com/funny-4725-nicholas-sparks/ One of my favorite pick-me-ups of all time.

Hack or not, I wouldn't care about him at all if he weren't so hilariously conceited. Other than the great writers he compared himself to and blithely put down mentioned in the article I linked, he's also called Cormac McCarthy "horrible" and "melodramatic". Seriously, dude?

He is such a fucking douchebag. I love romance novels but I won't touch his work with a ten foot pole because he's such a douchebag D:

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
He's the Lurlene McDaniel of romance novels. Why did I read her books as a teen? I always ended up sobbing and sniffling though you knew something tragic was going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
wow rude, if i didn't have a nicholas sparks book lying around i never would've been able to kill the roach in my room

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Someone told me that "The Notebook" was the book by which she judged potential boyfriends; if she gave them the book and they did not cry when they read it, she didn't want to date them. So I picked up the book and discovered what a gag-worthy piece of sentimental garbage it was. God, I hated every excruciating paragraph. Good thing I'm not a boy and didn't want to date her, I guess.

Why is this a secret?! He should be killed. I think I yelled "FINALLY" at the end of The Notebook. (of course then I fell madly in love with the RL pairing of Ryan/Rachel and was crushed when they broke up so maybe I should shut up although Michael Sheen is awesome BUT STILLLLLLLLLL)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
He compared himself to Hemingway, and trashed Cormac McCarthy. What an idiot.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
His stuff is always really gag-inducing. I'm a huge sap and I still hate his work.

[identity profile] uponadecember.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. And it's not just that he's repetitive. He's just bad to begin with. I really wanted to like his books, but I found the "development" so forced.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine this is the sort of statement that will meet with much disagreement.

/cool story bro

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
ngl i haven't read any of his books and they are pretty much the opposite of everything i like but

i bumped into him irl at a book salon because i'm a clumsy fuck who had to dig past the crowd to get to the other stand i wanted to look at that was next to his
and he was being ridiculously polite and nice

so i always feel kind of bad about trashing his kind of books lmao

[identity profile] exmptfromsanity.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad there are other people who agree with this opinion. He's sappy, boring and not that good- sorry.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I will never forgive him for A Walk to Remember. I had ZERO idea she was going to get cancer and die when I rented it. I was so fucking furious with that movie.

Later, I learned that's basically the plot to all his shit - they fall in love, someone gets sick and dies, the end. It's like he has a fatal disease fetish.

I had to watch The Notebook for my Developmental Psychology class. I wanted to cry tears of agony
