(Anonymous) 2011-09-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Everything else aside, things that are current are going to tend to have larger and more active fanbases because a lot of people are exposed to them at the same time.This is why people are sad when they discover something awesome that's ten years old. There are certainly exceptions, but very few things can carry an ongoing fandom that long, and if they have, like with Star Trek or something like that, they've probably had an active, enthusiastic fandom since the beginning. Movie fandoms, specifically, tend to have fairly limited lifespans.
If you take an old movie, people are going to find it in their own time, individually, enjoy them for any number of the reasons you mentioned, and then move on because there's not an active fandom and no one else is discovering it with them. Since fandom is, by nature, a social group, other people being interested in the same thing at the same time is important.
