Labels help make people feel safe with themselves, and separate themselves from those who would mock them for being different. Sometimes labels help define how much business it isn't for other people to dig into. Most men who sleep with other men would rather identify as gay than to specify 'oh, I've slept with 7 guys and one woman, and will probably sleep with more guys in the future'.
