I agree that Eric started the "war" but I'm not that sure about Marnie's innocence, since she was willing to use necromancy with a dead person and that doesn't sound very nice to me.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So you excuse everything she did after going crazy? Like locking up innocent people and killing two of them?

Eric and Co. were vampires, it's in their nature to attack and kill like wild animals. Marnie had no excuse for all the shit she did. I will never forgive her for what she did to Lafayette and Jesus. ;_;

[identity profile] charakitai.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
While I don't find Marnie innocent, I feel uncomfortable about the "it's in their nature" argument. The same thing could reasonably be said about humans - we have a lot of "baser instincts", BUT we have the possibility (and, if we want to live in a society, obligation) not to let ourselves be ruled by them, due to our rational thinking, higher intelligence and capacity for empathy. I guess one could argue that vampires don't have those qualities in the same measure as humans, but in that case the portrayal of them as a "species" in tb is inconsistent, because they certainly seem to have them sometimes...

But omg, yes, Jesus and Lafayette! That was so heartbreaking. Bill? Eric? Sookie who? How could the writers possibly think we could care about their stupid love triangle in that moment...

True. But in the end, she got go to heaven or whatever the good side to True Blood's afterlife is. With all the blood that Eric, Pam and rest have spilled, I doubt they can say the same.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Antonia was way more sympathetic and had more reasons to hate vampires, and even she was like 'Marnie gurl just chill'.

I liked Marnie's plight at first, it was quite believable and people fearing vampires is, well, quite common and not unreasonable (just look at Tara). But then she just snapped and went way too far with it and became just as uncaring about hurting people for her cause as the vampires she hates are.

I actually disliked that, I thought it could've been a much cooler finale when you're unsure who you're supposed to root for. But I guess True Blood and balanced characters & grey morals are lol... I mean it's True Blood, what did I expect right.

I would have agreed with you in the beginning of the season. But not after the ending. She was a spiteful, weak willed character. Yeah, it sucks that she was picked on, it's true that Eric and the other vampires started it. But by the end of it, she wasn't just defending herself and her religion from the vampires, she was using her powers to control (and hurt) other people. She might have said it was for the greater good, but she was really doing it because now she was the one with the power and she could get back at everyone who ever treated her like a pariah.

[identity profile] subarashiine.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely disagree. The point of showing all the necromancy stuff in the beginning of the season was to hint at Marnie's true personality. I really believe would've gone power-hungry eventually, but the vamps only agitated the situation and made it happen sooner.

[identity profile] drbat.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it wouldn't have happened if Antonia hadn't bonded with her, which made her feel powerful and important. And Antonia wouldn't have bonded with her if Eric hadn't attacked her. I don't think she would have gone power-hungry all on her own.

"Old"? Dude, she's only like early 50s.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can see there is a vampire biting Petunia Dursley, and I can't feel the least bit bad about it :-)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Lol Dudley's mom.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pissed at how crazy and awful they made Marnie get in the last couple of episodes, and I think it was only because they realized halfway through that there was no logical reason, before that point, to not be 100% Team Marnie/Antonia. I know I sure was.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm loving your userpic and thinking that I very much need to see the source material.

What's that from?

Sirens icon love!!! (I need me some of those)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-19 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
This! The 180 seemed very uncalled for. Watching it happen felt like the writers were hitting me with a 2x4 yelling "THIS IS THE BAD GUY SO DON'T FEEL BAD WHEN SHE DIES, OKAY?"

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think I would have agreed with this in the beginning of the season, especially since initially, the only times she hurt the vampires was when they threatened her. I felt like her characterization got a bit weird in the end, though. It was a neat twist that Antonia wasn't the one controlling everything, but I felt like that contradicted what we saw of Marnie earlier. And I think the idea was supposed to be that Marnie was driven to doing what she did by generally being alienated by society her entire life, but again, we didn't really see that. She may have felt like an outsider, but she also had a community (her coven) that loved and respected her, which makes it harder for me to accept that she held those same people hostage and hurt them.

[identity profile] lisasimpsonfan.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I felt bad for Marnie in the beginning but once she started to let the power corrupt her and 'force' Antonia to go on with her plans against her will I lost all respect for her. Having a shitty life and feeling like an outsider does not excuse genocide.

[identity profile] ahkna.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eric's been pretty heinous in general this season when he wasn't an amnesiac. And even then he was still a nice murderer.

This season really annoyed me because I didn't like how the vampires are acting so persecuted.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
This season really annoyed me because I didn't like how the vampires are acting so persecuted.

Yeah, they were so... "LOL MURDER!" this season that it was hard to feel sorry that people wanted them gone.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Marnie is a character study in fanatical hatred.

Yes, she suffered at the hands of vampires, but in her quest for retribution she heaped suffering upon tons of individuals (human, vampire and other) that never did a thing to her. You're entitled to feel as much sympathy for her as you please, but the atrocities she suffered don't excuse the atrocities she committed.

This is quite the topical issue. For instance, it draws a very distinct parallel to the disturbing anti-Muslim sentiment that's be festering in the United States for the past decade. It's dangerous, hateful and mostly irrational. All but a handful of the Muslims in this world had nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11 and most were just as heartbroken and appalled by them as the rest of the world.

[identity profile] drbat.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Does that make Eric, Bill, and Pam Al-Qaeda?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think I'm done with this series, they changed so much and twisted some facts beyond recocnition. It's like they want us to hate the Vampires, only the asshole from the books (Bill) is suddenly King? Yeah, fuck you, too.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So I gave this series a chance and caught up with its previous seasons when they were rerunning up until the fourth season premiere and then I watched this season as they played it each Sunday.

I'm sorry but I quit.. I hoped it would get better, but the writing on this show ---- the countless crappy characterizations, the way they treat its female characters as lovesick/lovelorn morons or sluts that they kill off or continuously dumb down so you can't sympathize with them, the crappy "love" triangles (why is this so necessary?), the head producers in how they defend only certain characters and then dumb down and/or villainiize others so you defend only the characters the producers favor (what the hell?)---- it's all so heinously inconsistent and I'm supposed to like it because it's edgy and fantastic eye candy entertainment? No thanks.

[identity profile] firecracker-sj.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree and I think that's what made her such an interesting character and made it an interesting storyline, though I am not quite sure if that was intentional.

I love Eric and Pam, but they got what was coming to them, though I doubt they will learn anything from it.
