Ohh, that last prompt especially made me twitch. Cinderella was abused, she's not my favorite of the princesses, but hell, even now - years after my abuse - I still find holding eye-contact nerve-wracking.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This just reads like high school girls trying way too hard to passive-aggressively get back at the 'popular' girls by picking on the 'popular' princesses.

(Also, Ariel teaches them to not speak unless spoken to? Isn't that kind of just being cruel more than it is a stab at her personality. Same with Cinderella.)

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel was outspoken as fuck; that's one of the reasons why losing her voice was such a trial for her.

Can I just say I hate it when people shame female characters who have no qualms about distancing themselves from their families, but seem to not mind if it's a male character doing the same thing? Guess what, not everyone is that close to their fucking family, and it's not a crime to choose your SO over your family.

HI. I just want to say: THANK YOU.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So many times THIS. I love my parents, but I moved two states away from them for several very good reasons.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, even if you are close to you family it's still important to get some space from them as you grow up.

[identity profile] eiremauve.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for explaining that Ariel wanted to be human. It's like Ariel-bashers didn't listen to "Part of that World". >_

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problematic thing most people base their opinions on is the fact she finally decided to become human to get the prince, not to become human per se.
But I don't get the bashing either. I always thought Ariel was cool when I was a little girl. She knew what she wanted and she was ready to give up her old life to achieve it. Also she rebelled a lot against her overbearing father. She definitely didn't "hold her tongue", wtf.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into Disney fandom, but those prompts are annoying.
The last part of the second one made me laugh out loud, though. Mulan snagging "some pretty awesome dude" by pretending to be a man. I'd read that!

Re: the second prompt, I have a hard time imagining Ariel, of all people, teaching girls to be prim and proper. Cinderella and Snow White come from a different era with different values, but Ariel is a full-on 1980s/90s Rebellious Princess type, in my opinion.

And I've always thought that the people who go "Oh, she has to give up her voice in order to be appealing to a man! It teaches girls that boys will only like them if they shut up and don't have opinions!" were kind of missing the point there. Eric initially falls in love with her in part because of her voice, and her inability to speak is an obstacle to the relationship rather than helping it. Even once they get past that, he almost ditches her for a girl who does have a voice. Who, yes, is a sea witch and is doing some kind of witchy hypnotism thing, but still.

tl;dr I always liked Ariel as a kid and am biased, but I didn't come away with the impression that her lack of voice was meant to be a good thing.

(Also, I haven't watched Snow White in ages, but with Cinderella you could make an argument for her being pretty proactive and resourceful and going after what she wants despite being told that she can't have it. Yes, what she wants is to go to the ball and dance with the prince, but she's still not exactly sitting there and waiting for him to come to her.)

... and I just wrote way too many words about Disney movies on F!S. I make the best life choices!

Your post is great and you should feel great.

[identity profile] shinebunny.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
"It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man..."

The whole point is that losing your voice was a BAD thing for Ariel to do! But she made a mistake because she was young and in love. She listened to Ursula's bad advice and bought into that but that is what girls do. In the end she got her voice back and things turned out okay.

I like all the badass princesses but I don't feel like there's much point in bashing Snow and Cinderella. OP, go on with your business and ignore the haters.

(This comm sounds great, though. Do want.)

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I rage so fucking hard when I see people bashing Ariel. I have watched The Little Mermaid more times than I can count (when my neice was younger she watched it pretty much ever single day) and it was obvious that she wanted to be human a long long time. Just look at all the stuff she collected in the cave! Plus when she was human she seemed far more interested in being human than being with Eric. He was just a happy bonus.

[identity profile] kitkat1327.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's been a whole lotta that recently :/

I haven't seen any that broke our rules, though. If you see any outright bashing, let me know.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yeah, don't worry about it; I agree they haven't broken the rules of the comm. I originally posted this at [livejournal.com profile] disneysecret just to express my frustration, and someone else reposted it here. I admit the prompts are pretty interesting, but they just push buttons that are sensitive to me because I hear them a lot outside of disney_kink ("Cinderella is a pushover for being abused!" "Ariel gave her voice up for a man!" "Snow White is so domestic and therefore stupid and un-feminist!"). I still love the comm to pieces though ♥

I HATE THIS. they kind of sound like trolls to me, though. especially the first one.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the old princesses, too. However, on a kink meme, people are allowed to post what they like as long as they don't break the rules. I hope they both get awesome fills.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking forward to seeing all the juicy fic the current Disney Kink fill-a-thon produces!!

Is this a reworking of the secret posted at the Disney Secret comm? Because it looks different but I swear those are the same prompts. Either way, I agreed there and I agree here - people who actually think this about the princesses should probably watch the films again, not just rely on memory and ranty internet meta. I think they'd be surprised at how little what actually happens matches with what they've convinced themselves happens.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
what's the comm for this???

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
This is just ridiculous. I mean, bashing on Cinderella? Really? She was being abused for chrissakes! EMOTIONAL ABUSE IS JUST AS REAL AS PHYSICAL ABUSE. Because she didn't fight against her abuser? ASLJKDH

Also, people move away from their families all the time. The reason I didn't even apply to the university and community college in my hometown? So I would have an excuse to leave. >I

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd rather lift these ladies up through fanfic, create fixfic to expand their characters, than tear them down for not being progressive in canon.

OP, I suppose

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I originally made this secret for [livejournal.com profile] disneysecret and I suppose someone must have seen it and re-uploaded it here... Imagine my surprise to see this secret here! But thank you to everyone for all the comments; it was interesting to read them all.

And I apologize to the author(s) of the prompts I listed -- of course you have the right to post whatever prompts you like. But I just needed to get out my frustration and I was hoping to do it in a small environment ([livejournal.com profile] disneysecret) rather than call it out on the huge multi-fandom hub that is [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets. ^^;
