I think the best you can do is talk/post in a personal journal about how much better you feel with exercising and your schedule and whatnot, and if you're close enough to any of your fandom friends to exercise together then maybe ask them to join you? But otherwise... It's like telling a smoker "to quit smoking, all you have to do is stop sucking on those cigarettes!" Pretty much every smoker already knows that, thankyouverymuch, and will be insulted if you mention it.

Sloth is a difficult addiction to break, it's impossible to go 'cold turkey' and it's very easy to come up with excuses why you should drive those two blocks instead of walking/biking, or why you have time to play on the computer but not do a few pushups, or find time to go to a public exercise place. It's painful, difficult, time consuming, and results take a long time to see. (And that's not even getting into the connection with exercise/weight/size that's so touchy, since while you can't accurately judge someone's fitness level by how they look, people sure as hell think you can)

And for some people? It may not be worth it. The hundreds of spent struggling through exercise to get and maintain a fitness level may not be worth ONE weekend of trotting around a con easily, as far as they see it.

Speaking from experience, you can't even do that in most fandoms because people will attack you for ~~guilt tripping them~~ by posting about your own fitness routines.

I would just post what I had lifted, number of sets, and if I'd hit muscle failure or not and was attacked for that. It was nothing more than strings of numbers and notation but apparently even posting that made me a fat hater.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but at least you have the higher moral ground that it's your own damn journal and they don't have to read it if it makes them feel guilty. I wouldn't go to a Dog Fanatic com and post how cats are better, they shouldn't come to my journal to tell me that my personal Cats Are Awesome posts are trying to shame them. (People still do it anyway, but it still makes them the troll, not you)

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I, personally, don't have any qualms posting about health and fitness things (not that I'm really doing any health/fitness things to post about) but someone on my Flist is, and -- I guess out of excessive politeness and worry -- they started another journal just in case the mere topic of attempts at healthy living would trigger people with eating disorders or some such.

[identity profile] westly-roanoke.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I started a whole other journal for my health/fitness stuff, because I didn't want to make my friends feel like I was some kind of asshole for doing the things I'm doing to make myself better, because I'm doing it a certian way...y'know? I just didn't want to post recipes for my own reference, or do a little dance about how much weight I've lost.

I'm fairly polite, and don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

So, while this is my life journal, http://primaldirewolf.wordpress.com is my fitness/eating journal.

If someone's interested, they can pop over there and have a look, instead of me feeling like I'm jamming my lifestyle down their throat.

Talking about your lifestyle isn't jamming it down their throat. Unless you're speaking with an air of superiority or saying how everybody else should do what you're doing, you're not jamming it down their throat. It's polite of you to do so, I guess, but it seems really unnecessary.

[identity profile] westly-roanoke.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm polite to a bit of a fault, I guess. ^_^;

Dude, it's your journal. If they don't like it they can gettttt outttt ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, my experience was that most of fandom is not, um, the most supportive place if you are really getting into physical fitness. Especially types of fitness which are not 'normal' for women, like weight-lifting. After a couple of months of getting shit for being a fat hater for just posting my weight numbers and then getting gendered shit about how I was going to turn into the hulk or something for lifting I just decided that most fandoms were not places I wanted to be anymore.
