I know you're coming from a good place, OP, but this whole secret just sounds really condescending to me. You sound like that one member of a group of alcoholic friends who got sober and now thinks they know what's best for everyone else in the group.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
and you sound like a lazy ass

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally am except for the hour's worth of laps I swim each morning.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't take a genius to know that being sober is better than being alcoholic. Same with being at a healthy weight than being overweight.

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, duh. I meant that she's acting like she knows exactly what her friends need to do to lose weight like she did, when what worked wonders for her may not work the same way for others. Besides, perhaps her friends don't mind not being as fit as she is.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-17 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, they're probably just lazy fatties.

[identity profile] seven-costanza.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I...don't believe I implied that?

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, it's one thing to not mind being "as fit" as other people, but there's nothing enjoyable about being at an awesome place when all you can focus on is how you're huffing and puffing with aching legs just to fail at really keeping up with everybody else, none of whom are moving terribly fast.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
This happened to me just once, but i was the other guy. I realized I'd lost a friend, and they were a ways behind me looking all beat up and I realized my normal pace was apparently grueling for them. Kinda a sad moment.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
where did she say they need to lose weight or it will do the very same for them? she says they aren't fit and if you aren't fit exercise (obviously different amounts or types for different people) helps everyone even a little. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that.

perhaps her friends don't mind not being as fit as she is
you are not serious. please show me someone who enjoys being out of energy and breath all the time. Please.

[identity profile] baka-deshi.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
One quibble here: OP never said anything about the friends being fat, just that they're not in shape. I'm splitting hairs because one of the primary reasons some of my skinny friends give for huffing and puffing around cons is that "they don't need to exercise, they're THIN."

Exercise or don't, that's your choice, but don't use your current weight as the reason you should or should not work out :)

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much how I feel about it. And there will be people like the commenters above who think it's their business because being sober and fit is objectively better than being an out-of-shape alcoholic, but it's really somebody's own personal choice whether to try and be healthy or not. Somebody else's vice is not my problem (unless they're, like, an alcoholic parent or sibling or spouse whose behavior affects my life in which case it can become my business inasmuch as it affects me).

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, here we go.

Whenever ANYONE talks about bettering him or herself through ANY means (working for a charity, getting a better education, getting fit, getting sober), there is always going to be someone who feels inferior by this. But of course, the one who is doing good is the condescending ass.

Also, I wouldn't compare fitness to alcoholism. A recovering alcoholic/drug addict would do well to stay away from alcoholic/addict peers, not as a matter of superiority, but as a matter of survival.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's because of people like you that the op had to make this a secret. There is absolutely nothing condescending about it, she just sounds really happy about her health and wants the same for her friends. Who doesn't want their loved ones to feel good too? That's not condescension that's concern. How she goes about telling/asking makes the difference and the mere fact that she's trying to figure out how over here should show you that.
I really hope your argument is not based on the whole 'omg she doesn't know what's wrong!' excuse.
Basically, if you find this condescending, then you're on the defensive and that lies with you.
