It was just a shit situation all around, really. Viewers knew the paradox could never exist (let's just forget the Christmas special happened...) and the Doctor knew as well.

I think, in a crap situation, he made the right... call? I say that hesitantly because it was an enormous dick move anyhow, but Rory was the one best capable of choosing (since young!Amy was knocked out).

I'm just confused why people are stunned by the fact that the Doctor can be a douche. He's ALWAYS been a sly, manipulating jackass when the situation calls for it. And I kind of love him for it.
