To me, there was no right or wrong solution there, just the choice. It was horrible, it was unfair, and there was no third option to take. It was cruel of the Doctor to make it Rory's choice... but it was also Rory's wife who was on the line, and if anyone should make a choice about her when she can't, it should be him (remember 'Black Spot,' with Amy taking responsibility of Rory's care from the siren? That works both ways.) Which was he willing to do? And even then, he almost did let her in until she made him back down.

The unpleasant lack of a tidy alternative, honestly, is what made the episode interesting to me.

yeah, the great thing about Doctor Who is that it isn't like Star Trek where when faced with an impossible choice, they just reconfigure the quantum bullshit emitter and find a nice pat ending free from guilt. In Doctor Who bad things happen to good people, and the ending is always not as bad as it could be, but nowhere as good as we'd like. For my closing remarks I'll hand you over to Five!Doc

Agree, but even Five had more actual adventure, and aliens, and space-and-time-etc.

Ten and Eleven have a whole lotta wwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhngst. And that is not what I watch my skiffy TV for.
