I remember it being a revelation to me when I first entered college, in 1990. As a kid from a very strict family, on my own for the first time? Having a new college friend take me to a showing in Harvard Square with all the "freaks" and all was just an amazing experience. A chance to let go and be silly and bawdy and rude and sexy without regret. All through college I loved going to our local showings when I could.

Yet one time when I tried to watch it at home with friends? Ugh, no. Even later in life at a midnight showing with a floorshow, it just didn't do it for me. I think RHPS is just one of those things that either "clicks" with you or it doesn't, and it has to click at the right time in your life, if/when you need it. And watching it without a group or audience has NEVER ever done it for me.

My first week of orientation in college the girl next door took me to see Rocky Horror in Harvard Square. It was a fantastic initiation into college (especially my particular university).

Ha! Just curious which university you were at? I was an MIT nerd. There were a lot of us who were total RHPS fanatics at the time. We had one showing at school movie night one year, and the guy who introduced me to RHPS in Harvard Square - who I was massively crushing on at the time - organized an impromptu floor show. He played Frank. I couldn't decide if I was utterly horrified or completely turned on like nothing else.

Thinking about your comment, it may be that for a lot of people it's part of growing up in a way, letting go of strict upbringing. My upbringing wasn't all that strict, so I keyed on the coercion, didn't get it, and found it creepy like whoa that people apparently thought creepy consent issues were funny.

Years later, going with friends and watching them totally go nuts at the show, I had fun. But it really wasn't any kind of revelation; by the time I went to the show I'd already tried experimenting sexually, so it was just kind of "Oh" with a side of my friends having a blast and getting a contact high from that.

...and being prepared for the consent issues because I'd seen it before, and telling myself "it's just one line in something intentionally bad" so I didn't get creeped out again.
