You have to go to a show. Watching it by yourself is NOT the same. Trust me. I watched it by myself first and had a really hard time understanding why people love it. Then I went to a midnight show at my university and had the greatest time. The experience is what makes it.

I don't like it either. I like a couple of the songs but I never want to sit through it again.

I pretend I think it's awesome, and I let people think I must have seen it a bunch of times when really I've only seen it 1 1/2 times. Because I'm convinced there must be something wrong with me if I don't like it.

I get that the audience is the fun part, and I've been in the audience and seen the schtick, and I get why people like it. But I just... don't.

I get why other people like it. I just didn't care for it either. I don't hate it. It's just not for me. Some people have a hard time getting that you can NOT enjoy something but not hate them for liking it. *shrug*

You don't really watch RHPS. You go to the movie dressed up as the characters, yell callbacks and throw stuff at the screen, etc. while actors re-enact the scenes live on stage in front of the movie. The fandom is only tangentially based around watching the actual movie. You can't really pop in a dvd of RHPS and get the full experience of what RHPS is about.

That being said, I'm not really into the movie or the whole ~RHPS EXPERIENCE~ either way. But it does kind of seem like your friends are doing it wrong if they told you that you would enjoy this movie because you're a fan of musicals.

ETA: I do enjoy the songs from the movie and the soundtrack album was one of my favorite things to listen to as a kid

I loved it when I was, like, 17. Now it kind of bores me. And creeps me out, tbh. There are a few songs that I still like, but overall it alternates between making me roll my eyes and making me really uncomfortable.

Also, are all your friends teenagers? I remember when I was a teen, it was the "cool thing" amongst my friends to be REALLY into Rocky Horror because they thought it made them look edgy and interesting.

The movie is decent enough I suppose, and I enjoyed it when I saw it, but I only saw it the one time and never got into the hype.

I'm kind of surprised when people like it now. It seems like a lot of what made it great was the live show experience back when that experience started 30+ years ago, you know? Not that I don't believe anyone could enjoy it, especially at a good performance, and I like a lot of the music, but I wouldn't think it was strange not to like it.

I watched it with my college film club, but we didn't dress up or do the callbacks or anything. I actually liked it, but at the same time I can see why people wouldn't? It's weird. There's nothing that you HAVE to like, although I can understand why you'd feel you'd have to pretend to like it for your friends. Maybe consider telling the one you trust the most? You might feel better if you're actually honest about it.

It isn't an actual good movie, so don't feel bad for disliking it.

I fell in love with it while watching it on my own. It was clear right away that there was nothing to take seriously in it, so I wasn't creeped out by the coercive sex, but it's really easy to see how others would be creeped out. Everyone has their own places where they can and cannot turn their brains off for entertainment.

The characters are sexy to me, I love cheesy/still wonderful and atmospheric/over the top horror movies in general, the costumes are sexy to me, I love the songs. IDK, I love it for it's cheesiness, but also for the surface value (corset and feather boa dance makeout session in a creepy lit pool) I don't get liking it when you aren't into many of the elements that make it up, or liking the live show without liking the movie (except as a fun dress social event). So... it's totally understandable that it's left you cold. All the fun things about it are very love it or hate it, or just plain don't get it.

What I really don't get is being into it to be edgy. The time for that is decades past.

I used to have to go to live shows all the time because my bff participated in the like... reenactments or whatever. I thought it was dumb; the only part I liked was the Meatloaf song.

Tbh, I've found it most enjoyable to sit and watch it with friends who know the lines to yell out. Watching it by yourself is boring and seeing it live (musical or at a movie theater) can be potentially awkward/terrible (personally, I did not like seeing the musical performed live because I only feel comfortable being ridiculous in front of my friends).

Don't worry. Plenty of people dislike The Rocky Horror Picture Show, myself included. I just didn't find anything --characters, story, and most of the music aside of "Time Warp"-- really that appealing.

As near as I can tell, I am one of like six people in the whole world whose opinion of this film is "eh, it's okay," whether we're talking about the movie itself (which would be great MST3K fodder if only the fans hadn't already mined that vein to bare rock) or the live show (I've been twice, parts of it were fun, parts were kind of tacky and gross) or just the music.

It's OK. You can let your friends have their fun without having to participate, and if they keep pushing after you've tried it and found it creepy, then they're being bad friends.

You know, I still haven't seen this movie. It was supposed to be my first 'official' R-rated movie once I turned seventeen (yeah, I'd seen other R-rated movies before then, but my parents and aunt are strange), but that honor or whatever went to The Full Monty instead. From what I've heard about Rocky Horror, it was a good choice.
