I don't know, I kind of liked the scene. It showed that not even the Doctor is perfect. He may be a Time Lord but he's still only human.

...uhhhh, but he's not human? Which is why everyone wangsting and trying to assign "cold-hearted" and "callous" to his actions just makes me head-desk? The Doctor is alien. What about that do you not get?

It's just an expression. The doctor may be older than Yoda, but he's not infallible and he IS going to make mistakes. Just because he is this cosmic wandering madman in a blue box doesn't mean that he knows everything that there ever is to know. People seem to forget that at times, thinking that he should know everything in the universe backwards and forwards and not make mistakes that get people killed.

really big difference: rory had a choice.

sure, it was a choice made in adversity in response to a really shitty situation, but it was still his choice. also he was able to move about, interact with others not trying to kill him, etc etc (as him getting a job as a security guard indicates, btw). he wasn't in solitary, and he had reason. really not the same thing.
