I view her in the opposite direction. To me, she is a narcissist and there is no way she could have loved Rapunzel because she couldn't see beyond her own desires.

I mean, is there any examples within the movie that showed that she might have truly loved her? Because I didn't see anything.

Getting her those shell paints, maybe? She wouldn't let Rapunzel see the lanterns, but when she asked for the paints, even after complaining about the trip Mother Gothel still left to get them for her. Sure it could all be part of the plan to keep Rapunzel content, but I like to think there was a little care there. The hug was pretty sweet too.

Yeah, and to me that came across as a way to keep her content in order to still keep her hidden away. Gothel's actions toward Rapunzel are very self motivated, and I really think that if she did love her there would be some examples where it shows Gothel doing something for Rapunzel that would not have benefited her, at all.

I think it's pretty subjective; afterall I do think Gothel was a major witch who was horrible for what she did, but I do think she was a slightly complicated villian. Her care for Rapunzel was definitely superficial, but I think she did love her in a twisted way just a little bit. Until the end, anyway.

I think she was definitely slightly more complicated than your average disney villain. After she returned Rapunzel home and told her again how cruel the world was she really seemed to mean it (her whole eye movement implied to me that she was emotionally invested/remembering something), like she'd experienced horrible betrayal herself in the past.


Then again I think most of her softness to me comes from the voice acting, not so much from the animation or actions. She often sounds incredibly genuine, haha.

Yeah I agree. I watched the movie after seeing a lot of fandom secrets about this very topic, so I was looking for hints of genuine feeling. Honestly didn't see any. Gothel would say things with a snide under tone and everything she did had a double meaning/ulterior motive to me.

It would have been nice if she did care for Rapunzel. 'Cause that would have been really interesting. =/
