No.

"Misinterpreting" a character, especially Draco's tends to lead into character-bashing and a complete destruction of other characters in canon. For instance, Lucius ends up being abusive, Narcissa ends up being weak, Ron becomes an intolerant asshole, and Draco makes himself right at home within the trio.

If someone needs to bash another character just to make Draco into a misunderstood woobie, then why should anyone like away from that? Or just accept it? It isn't good writing, it isn't plausible, it's just crap. Particularly if one of the characters bashed happens to be your favorite.

This so much. I hate the idea of Lucius being abusive or Narcissa being weak. Both Lucius and Narcissa love their son above all else, and Narcissa is not weak. Considering that she chose Hogwarts for Draco over Lucius' objections, it is likely that she's the one more in control of the family. Draco wasn't abused, he was spoiled.

I thought it was canon that Narcissa is the dominant one in that family. There was text and sub-text to support it.

It saddens me that people still don't really see that.

A lot of people like going with stereotypes, and since the wizarding world, and purebloods in particular, are old fashioned in a lot of ways, they just assume that means medieval gender roles without actually looking at the text. There is no hint at all that purebloods have such rigid gender roles, and considering we have two female death eaters as well as other supporters, it just seems pretty OOC to go that route to me. And yes, I'm firmly convinced that Narcissa is the dominant one in their marriage.

I agree with this.

Differing literary interpretations are not the same as making Draco into a woobie.

This.

OP, your LotR=/=WWII example really doesn't fit here. I think Draco is an interesting character, and all his flaws and issues are what make fun for me to read about. But when people are taking his characterisation from OOC fanfic instead of canon, he's not the same character anymore. There's a difference between head canon, where you fill in the gaps in his story with your own personal theories, and arguing that a canon example of his behaviour isn't valid because it contradicts your head canon or claiming JKR "got him wrong".

There are a lot of Draco fangirls who love him for the character they read about in the books, warts and all. They may even write fanfic about his redemption, and it can be damn good reading. But there are some really vocal fans who love leatherpants!Draco, the poor misunderstood woobie cliche, and who seem to think Draco's redemption could only come about by 'proving' one or more of the Trio/Gryffindors done him wrong. Their version of Draco is virtually unrecognisable as canon!Draco, sometimes even in appearance, they have rigid views on Draco's personality but can never offer any canon examples to back up their set-in-stone opinions, and they're quick to demonise other characters while handwaving away canon examples of Draco's less-than-stellar behaviour. Out of the whole group of Draco fangirls, they're a very small percentage, but with HP fandom being so big that still ends up being a significant number and they are fiercely protective of their version of Draco. They'll appear pretty much anywhere and refuse to acknowledge any version of Draco but their own woobified version, shrugging off canon examples to say "well, I know the real Draco" over and over. It can be a frustrating experience, and with HP fandom having been around for so long, a lot of people have run into this behaviour. Repeatedly. I think we've all been through disbelief, annoyance, and the ability to just ignore it, and now a lot of us tend to sigh and pull out our quotes and smile for nostalgia that our fandom can still be going through this so many years later. When you see Draco-wank, it's nearly always people responding to that specific type of Draco-fan, the one who has rewritten the books in their mind, because we all quite like the books as they are, thank you very much.
