No. Words are insulting if they're understood to be insults by those who hear them. And I still don't see what's silly about 'muddy'. The meaning and the inference is obvious.

I mean that you can use every word you want as an insult if you say it with that intent.

And since OP isn't saying that her classmates use that word with a racial meaning, it's silly to be so upset about that.
