That's not quite true. He doesn't think his canon is above fanfic. He just doesn't want people playing in the sandbox that he worked so hard to build. This is his livelihood after all.

Martin thinks fanfic is lazy and that people would be better off working on their own original fiction. (I had this straight from Martin himself, in a conversation at a convention back in 2005.)

He did a post on his blog a while back on the subject. You can read it here (http://grrm.livejournal.com/151914.html) and here (http://grrm.livejournal.com/152072.html).

lol

honestly, i think the fandom might be a bit more active/larger if he "allowed" fanfic, which is pretty beneficial in the long run. booming fandom = more interest in series = more people buying your books.

You say "Solanum tuberosum," I say "potato."

All fiction is built on what comes before it, and thus I can only think less of those who insist others don't do the same with their own work -- especially when so many authors start out writing fanfiction before moving on to creating their own settings and characters.

And yet, he's allowed for an RPG to be made...

I've heard the sandbox argument several times and rolled my eyes at it several times.

And tbh when people say "fanfic is lazy," I'm generally like, first of all, no u, and second of all, even if it were, it's entertainment and why do I have to be so damn non-lazy all the time? And why can't I write fanfic and original fiction both?

However, I did appreciate reading his thoughts on the matter, and he doesn't seem like, particularly venomous or anything.

I don't know if everyone has already been linked to this ad nauseam because it's prittz old, so sorry if I'm just repeating tired arguments, but I just found this recently and think it makes some great points on the subject: http://bookshop.dreamwidth.org/999259.html

Now, I'm not saying your garden variety fanfic is anything like most of the things listed in that article (is that what you'd call it? Idek.), but I do think it dispenses with the sandbox argument pretty thoroughly.

I wonder if the same people who call fanfic 'lazy' would say the same thing about non-fantasy? I mean, hell, you're using reality, no worldbuilding at ALL, how lazy can you get?
