I think the problem, as usual, is that because there is not so much representation, every character that is gay gets bombarded into an exemplar function. And that's where the complaining about stereotypes comes from, essentially. If every show had three gay characters, then there would be much less riding on the ones in the spotlight.

Of course, the few shows I've found that aren't giving stereotyped characters turn these characters into just 'the gay character,' the one who's only pulled out when they want to tell a 'gay person's story' - the various struggles of coming out or finding a relationship. The examples that come to mind are Riley on Degrassi, who had a major storyline about coming out to the school in the first half of season ten and then only appeared in one two-parter in the second half about him trying and failing to come out to his mother, while his friends got several other stories, or Teddy of 90210 getting relegating to subplots throughout his coming out struggles. Both of these are happening in the middle of other 'issue' oriented plots, like parents getting divorced or sexts, lies, and video or friendships and betrayals... No, they're only relegated to 'the gay plot.' Sure, there's drama there, but there's other drama that DOESN'T hinge on their sexuality that is generally ignored.
Sorry for the rant, this is something of my soapbox activism topic.

Then again, I also get how people are suspicious if people are hating on Kurt very much. I think that that has to do with the fact feminine, and in extension effeminate behavior is, often by definition considered negative.
I actually have a long-time gay friend who recently said he'd like to put all effeminate guys on an island a bomb it. Now, the boy does have a history of expressing himself with hyperboles, but the sentiment is very real. .And he is not the only one I've seen it in (albeit, more politely phrased). It's a sort of glorification of "manly man" characteristics, that I do sort of find problematic (even when dealing with straight men, for the record).
I'm not saying you do that, specifically - for the record. Though I have seen it on occasion with some Kurt haters. And now I'm ranting, heh!

I guess I just want to get to the point where it's not so much "is this character a good LGBT character" and to the point where it's "Is this a good character?" However, it's not even at that point for women characters (all those times that people clamor for strong female character) so it's a long road for LGBT representation in media.
