I honestly disagree. I think a lot of this is up for interpretation, which makes Gothel pretty interesting. However, everytime Gothel showed Rapunzel any kind of affection, it was hair related (I.e petting her hair, touching her hair during a hug) which makes me think she didn't care abot Rapunzel.

I really love the movie, so the last time I watched it I watched for Rapunzel and Gothel's interactions, and the body language is there. Every time Gothel is trying to be "affectionate" to Rapunzel, she does something with Rapunzel's hair.

I do think that Gothel is really emotionally abusive and didn't care about Rapunzel, but man I LOVE the subtle use of body language in this.
