I doubt anyone is using it to insult real mixed people. People that racist will just come out and say it.

Idk, can you be bothered by anyone using mudblood when since you say we are all muggles then anyone using it would just be self hating? That's what you seem to be saying to me

The issue for me is that while Muggles vs Wizards is a fantasy concept that isn't really related to any real issues of race or ethnicity, "pure blood" vs "mixed blood," and the idea that blood should not be mixed, is a concept that's directly borrowed from real world racism. (note that wizards like Hermione who have muggle descent don't have less magical powers than, say, the Malfoys, or the Weasleys. So magic doesn't really have much to do with it.)

To me it's like kids in WoW calling everything they don't like "gay" -- even though it's in a fantasy context and divorced from the original meaning, it seems distasteful to me because it's so closely related to real-world oppression.

There's a difference though - the use of the word 'gay' has more blatant real-world connotations because it is still equating people's actual sexual orientation with something bad.

The word 'mudblood' refers to a fictional group of people in a fictional universe. While I agree with your point about how it could be used as a real-world racial insult, that's still a problem with people's attitudes and that specific usage, not the word itself, because in the real world it is not a common or widespread racial slur. When it is, I will support the boycotting of its use, but it really really isn't. To argue that it's offensive really is to miss the dividing line between fiction and reality, but it has not been used as a racial slur on a widespread basis in the real world.

Your WoW example is a different story, though. That's using a real life slur in a real life way. The fantasy context has nothing to do with it cause people have been using 'gay' to describe things they don't like for awhile now. In this case, they are using it to describe WoW instead of that pair of shoes or whatever else stupid people use 'gay' to describe things negatively. With mudblood, it still comes back to being altogether fictional.
