You can do realistic portrayals of bored, frustrated teenagers without actually producing boring, frustrating work. The readers did not have to experience Harry's muddling confusion. This was not an interactive piece, it was a book.

That's literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Of the top of my head, Schindler's List. It can be difficult, I suppose, but it is hardly impossible or non-existent.

it would either have had to dwell on the whole "children being tortured" thing, or come off as the exciting adventures of war, glossing over the realities.

She managed to write about Umbridge emotionally and physically torturing the students for an entire school year without ~glamorizing~ the affect politics plays in schools. I think you're really, reallllly underestimating a writer's ability to control their message.

I'd like to contribute 'When the Wind Blows' and 'Das Boot' to the 'war is not fun at all' list. (I'd volunteer 'The Iron Cross' as well, but am certain someone somewhere would see it as fun and exciting. T____T)

I'd grant you "When the Wind Blows": it is long and slow, and full of bickering between our two slowly dying protagonists. Like the camping scenes in DH, but with more dying. Less fun than the book. Not really war, though: more an apocalyptic anti-nuclear weapons film. You cannot say that our protagonists are at war, or are fighting in any way. It is nothing like what anyone complaining about DH wanted the book to be like: they wanted exciting tales of daring do in Hogwarts.

"Das Boot" I have definitely heard people talking about how inspiring the bravery and honour etc etc...

I didn't find DH frustrating to read at all: I thought it reduced the action, but I didn't find it boring. But then, I wasn't reading it for exciting action scenes.

Schindler's list isn't an anti-war movie at all: it's a celebration of someone who stood up against genocide. If it's the dumbest thing you've ever heard, you'll be arguing with a lot of dumb people over the years because it's hardly an unusual opinion. Every 'anti-war' film I've ever encountered, I've heard teenagers describing them and, yes, they do the whole "how terrible" thing, but they also go on about how cool the film was, how they enjoyed the gore and the bravery.

If you think Umbridge's year is at all comparable to what was going on in Hogwarts in that final year, I think you missed a lot of what was implied. The worst physical torture Umbridge used, as far as we saw, was the quill. The Deatheaters in Hogwarts, that final year, were fully torturing students. The DA were hiding students because they risked being tortured to death.
