Going by Bill being bitten when Fenrir wasn't in wolf mode, and not turning into a werewolf himself (aside from a few harmless quirks), there was never even a risk of the baby being a werewolf. Remus running out was so bizarre as, for a non werewolf kid, life would be better without jobless, werewolf dad. But a werewolf kid? NEEDS werewolf dad! His irrational freak out does not strike me as coming from a good relationship, but ymwv.

The timing was just off too. Tonks becomes pregnant and finds out she's pregnant, like, instantly after the wedding. That just highlights out shoehorned the baby was.

I get that JRK wanted her war orphan, but I wish the marriage and baby had started sooner (solid evidence of a relationship in book five, Tonks could still be used as a red herring in book six). It'd make the whole thing less crazy go nuts.

If I recall (I've only read the book) I don't think he left because he thought the kid would be better off without him. He left because he couldn't take the thought that he'd doomed his child to the same life full of prejudice and hatred that he had. Yeah, it was extremely irresponsible and irrational, but for someone who always came across as non-confrontational to begin with, it's not out of character that he would freak out under that sort of pressure. I don't think it says anything about the relationship, more about Lupin's own weaknesses.

I think he did say he'd be better off without him. Lupin is the one that brings the prejudice since he's the werewolf, was the way I remembered it.

The relationship did by the end seem terrible to me, but I think that was just because it wound up that practically their whole relationship was Lupin trying to get away from it for different reasons and Tonks and other people shoving him back to her. I wasn't supposed to see it as terrible, but it just seemed joyless because of that. The last time we see Lupin is finally happy...and back with his friends instead of Tonks.
