I agree. I am all for having children and families are great and whatever, but when you are in the middle of a war it is not the best time. Especially with the very real possiblity that you could die. Both of them, especially Remus, saw what it was like for Harry not to grow up without his parents. Why they would risk their own child to grow up the same is beyond me. I kinda feel sorry for Teddy. If I was him I would have at some point asked myself why my parents had me in the first place.

Honestly Tonks and Lupin having a baby bothers me FAR LESS that the whole married-couple-with-kids epilogue for everyone.

I don't know, but for some reason it sort of made sense for Tonks and Lupin. To put it in a very cliché way, like it was a natural extension of their love and their relationship. For them, it made sense to me - far more than for Luna to get married, or Hermione having kids before being 30, or whatever.

While I agree with you that I think it was a stupid idea for Tonks and Lupin to have a baby during the darkest times of the war, I've got to play Devil's Advocate here. Didn't James and Lily do the same thing seventeen years before with Harry? And the Longbottoms? And the Weasleys had, what, 75% of their children during Voldemort's first war? It seems that Voldie never stopped the wizarding world from making babies.

Going by Bill being bitten when Fenrir wasn't in wolf mode, and not turning into a werewolf himself (aside from a few harmless quirks), there was never even a risk of the baby being a werewolf. Remus running out was so bizarre as, for a non werewolf kid, life would be better without jobless, werewolf dad. But a werewolf kid? NEEDS werewolf dad! His irrational freak out does not strike me as coming from a good relationship, but ymwv.

The timing was just off too. Tonks becomes pregnant and finds out she's pregnant, like, instantly after the wedding. That just highlights out shoehorned the baby was.

I get that JRK wanted her war orphan, but I wish the marriage and baby had started sooner (solid evidence of a relationship in book five, Tonks could still be used as a red herring in book six). It'd make the whole thing less crazy go nuts.

I always thought it was kind of an accident. Not necessarily a terrible one, but an accident. I mean, I'm sure they do have some form of birth control or another, but even still accidents do happen.

Even if it was 100% completely planned, though, I always thought that the whole rushed aspect was not unrealistic for a wartime setting. Kind of like "We've got this time, let's not waste it."

It was an accident. Couldn't have been anything else. Except if you want to go really cynical and think Tonks tricked Lupin into thinking she was using birth control when in fact she wasn't. I'll admit the relationship was a bit odd, but I doubt it was that messed up. Maybe they both thought the other one was taking precautions? Idiots.

Tbh, I've wondered the same thing about James and Lily. We know less about the circumstances back then, but it sounds like they were fighting constantly as well. Why bring a baby into that?

Like honestys_easy said, most of the main characters were babies born during the first war. All the Weasley children were born in the 11 years of the first war- Bill might have been conceived before it started, but the other 6 definitely weren't. And then there's Harry, Neville, Luna, Draco... Really, every non-foreign or non-muggleborn kid in Harry's year (and for ~10 years before and a year after) was born or conceived during the war, and they can't all have been accidents.

Psychic!anon is psychic! I was thinking this just yesterday, and I agree with you completely. It was so irresponsible that I don't even have words. It wasn't so much that they were in the middle of a war, it was that they were both soldiers in that war, with a duty to fight, but when you become a parent, that is your priority - or should be. And yet it couldn't be, because there was nothing more important than stopping Voldemort.

And I don't accept this 'it was an accident' excuse. Being pregnant does not mean staying pregnant. It was the worst possible time to have a child.

Tbh, though, it doesn't bother me all that much. Different strokes for different folks, but it's pretty obvious that the parent-child relationship is really important to JKR which is why it shows up all over the place in Harry Potter.

Do you know what one of the strongest urges is when placed under huge amounts of life-threatening types stress? Having tons and tons of sex. You wanna know one of the hardest situations to get reliable birth control is? It's when a war is going on, not only is birth control scare enough due to logistical reasons, but also when you are running for your life on a daily basis and being under life-threatening stress then people tend to forget about it even when they have it. Can you guess what this all adds up to? If you said anything other than babies, babies, babies, then go remove your genitalia with an ice-cream scoop as you should never be allowed in the gene pool.

I dunno about absolute birth control. Sure, it's probably pretty good but wasn't it mentioned somewhere that there are some essential things that magic can't control/produce? I imagine the creation of a life would fall under that. They kept the baby because they figured it may be the only chance they would have (spoiler: it was. And Teddy, more than part of a nuclear family, creates a parallel for Harry and Sirius- Harry gets to be the godfather Sirius couldn't)

And furthermore... what do you think happens during real wars? that people crazy-glue their legs together?

Honestly, I don't see why this is all that surprising. Neither of them are shown to be all that responsible as adults, and by the end of HBP, Lupin is a shell of his former self and Tonks was never practical or particular mature. So Tonks accidentally ending up pregnant (although it might have been accidental, who knows really) is easy for me to believe, and I don't see her or Lupin as being the kinds of people to abort the baby.

These two both made stupid decision after stupid decision in the last two books, really.

It gave a reason to show Lupin's flaws to a greater extent when he tries to abandon his family in the final book.

After all, it wouldn't have worked if he'd just abandoned Tonks; she was a trained auror and could handle herself.
