I was actually under the impression that Remus and Tonks kind of fell into a relationship as a result of mutual grief over Sirius and oh, shit, world's gonna end. And by 'fell into relationship' I mean 'fell into fucking.' Those pesky affection love-type feelings follow afterwards. I mean, in every medium, the pairing literally comes out of nowhere. I honestly don't think it would occur to either Tonks or Remus to look to the other as a possibility, so it always made sense in my head that the whole RELATIONSHIP was an accident, not just the pregnancy. Not to say that it was necessarily a bad thing, just unplanned.

I also kind of always thought the wedding was a bit shotgun. I know in the books at least you find out they're married and then you find out they're pregnant, but that's not necessarily the order in which it happened. I doubt Tonks would be the type to push that on Remus, but it might have been a way to pacify Andromeda.

It wouldn't surprise me if Remus thought about getting rid of the baby (more so about the lycanthropy than the war issue, though I'm sure that occurred to him as well), but he never would have said it if it was clear Tonks wanted the baby. And yes, for a variety of reasons, this is totally irresponsible, but it was her choice what to do, and she chose to keep the baby. You never know what you're going to do in that kind of situation until you're in it.

Anyway, I don't mean this comment in a ship-bashing way. I used to hate it with a passion, I'll be honest, but I do think the bottom line is they loved each other and were able to comfort each other to some degree in the end. It's still not my favorite pairing (and Tonks's behavior in HBP will never cease to mystify, though I remind myself continually that all was seen through the Harry-filter and he hopefully always caught her on particularly bad days), but I can accept what happened with them in canon without seeing red.

Thanks, and I agree. My head-canon is pretty close to this, only with more (probably one-sided) Remus/Sirius, and Tonks being so depressed throughout book 6 because she and Remus already were sleeping with each other, but in a confused, sad and unromantic way.
I guess I just really don't like what JKR did to Tonks's character after book 5, and not getting rid of a baby in these circumstances kinda makes her even less likable to me. She was really awesome and I was looking forward to more of her in book 6, but by then she was already ruined.
