Of course wartime is not a sane responsible time to get pregnant. But by the logic that there should be no babies born during times of crisis the human race should have died a long time ago. As many others have stated war makes people do crazy things like propose and get married and go off on the sex like crazed viagra bunnies. If you're going to get bothered by Tonks and Lupin, you should be thoroughly disgusted by Molly and Arthur-what with the eloping and having Bill through Ginny during Voldemort's reign. And anybody else who was in Hogwarts in their respective years. Lily and James, Frank and Alice, Xenophilious and his wife and all the rest are just as guilty. Lily and James and Frank and Alice were actively fighting Voldemort too. Frank and Alice Longbottom were BOTH aurors-two of the precious few who stood against Voldemort. Do Harry and Neville's births bother you as much as Teddy's?
Life goes on, through war and famine and disease and death, people have babies whether its a "good" time to do it or not.
Besides, in what way was Nymphadora Tonks portrayed as a level headed and responsible adult? She always struck me as quite young and scatterbrained and careless. It isn't too hard to believe she let herself get caught up in her strange little whirlwind romance and wind up quickly pregnant, as many young war brides do. Maybe the magical world does have great birth control, but this is a young woman who lived a high stress life with a high stress lover (who she had to fight to keep in the first place) and more than one woman I can name has ended up panicking over a positive pregnancy test after one little slip-up.
Lupin's reaction was clearly that this was not something a lot of planning went into. That implies to me the whole wedding was rather shot-gun and impulsive.
Yes, the parent relationship is clearly important to JKR and a lot of characters did end up with babies ever after but not everyone hates that. Also not every character wound up with a billion babies.
tl:dr - Tonks having a wartime baby after becoming a wartime bride is one of the more realistic parts of the ending and if you're going to pick on Teddy point a few fingers at every baby born from the '70s to '81 too.
OP
(Anonymous) 2011-09-20 08:32 am (UTC)(link)And yes, Order-babies from the first war also bother me. But as I see it, it's different with Tonks, because, as far as I remember, she is one of the TWO aurors left on the side of the Order. She's not just any girl who got herself pregnant, she has a lot of responsibility. Not getting rid of her baby in that situation makes her seem very unlikeable, and it's a shame that Rowling decided to do that to her character.
Re: OP
I do understand your point, but I don't think keeping the baby made her any less unlikeable. I've always thought people who have kids in tough times are expressing a lot more hope that the world will get better than those who'd rather wait until it does and I think that might be more along the lines of what Rowling was going for: that you have faith that things get better even in the darkest times. And yes Tonks was one of the last fighting for the Order, but Frank, Alice, Lily and James were directly defying Voldemort as well. And when Harry and Neville were conceived some time in late 1979 Voldemort was at his most powerful. Lily and James were only nineteen when they got pregnant with Harry and they were major players in the order and Frank and Alice were some of the last surviving aurors in their Order too (remember the Order took a LOT of casualties in the first war). It wasn't necessarily a well-advised time for either of those couples to procreate either especially once they had to retreat into hiding to protect their sons because of the prophecy, and yet nobody says much of anything about how Lily and James should have been a little more careful with birth control or how Frank and Alice REALLY didn't think that one through (as they were older and should logically be more responsible than a pair of 19 year old newlyweds and BOTH of them were critical aurors who Voldemort had a grudge against).
