I do get bothered by these things. The reason I wasn't so bothered by the Thor movie is because I wasn't so invested in the comics.

Than, and because what they did with The Last Airbender was on such a huge fucking scale. Not one of the characters is actually the ethnicity they look like in the cartoon. At least in Thor, Thor actually looks like you'd imagine a Norse God. Hell, in Avatar they actually went as far to change the goddamn buildings . Fire nation, which was always more Japanese inspired, now had Indian temples.

At least in Thor, the universe had the look and feel it should have.

tl, dr: I can understand how Heimdall would bother you on a personal level. However, it does not compare to the casting and universe overhaul they did with TLA. (Must stop raging now)

It was mentioned elseware, but the thing that made the A:TLA worse was the inconsistency. Like how many of the people that seemed to be based on the Inuit, namely the water tripe, looked right, except for the damn main protagonists. It'd actually have been better (if still stupid) if the water tribe was white, since at least it'd look consistent. At least the air nomads appeared to be extremely multiracial.

Since all the earth kingdom people were Chinese, at least Toph... oh who are we kidding. Toph would be whiter then Aang if the sequel ever gets made.

The reason it bothered me so much with The Last Airbender, is because what I loved about the cartoon was that it had such an amazing universe. And in that universe the tribes/nations were really fleshed out and made sense.


And yes, we'd have been lucky if they hadn't made Toph blonde.

All sarcasm aside, while I do think that movie was going to fail anyways, it's casting was so horrible I could honestly see this happening.

Also... Everybody in the fire nation but Iroh is Indian. WHY. M. Night would, one would expect, at least not be adverse to casting Indian's as fire nation peoples, considering the REST OF THE FREAKING CAST OF FIRE NATION PEPOLE.

You know what? Forget the Water Tribe. We saw Ozai. We saw Ozai's kids. You expect me to believe that's his unadopted brother? Arrrgh.

Unless that hypothetical second movie had some kinda touching upon all of this where "somebody in your family clearly had an affiar" explains all this shit.

The funny thing is, the movie pronunciations of the names were actually more Asian. The pronunciation of Aang on the show is just so American it made me cringe for the first few episodes before I got used to it. But to do all the whitewashing of the cast and then to go "we made the names more Asian, so we didn't do anything racist at all" was just so much missing the point that it made things worse.

Actually, from what I understood (from second hand information, as I can't read Chinese characters) Aang's name was pronounced properly in the show for how it was written in the characters on posters and whatnot. It's wrong if you take the English spelling, but it was never spelled in English in the show (excluding the credits) so it wasn't pronounced wrong at all. If anything, it was just spelled wrong in English (and it's right phonetically for English).
But even with that aside, with M. Night's "proper" pronuncitations, he just went with generic "Asian" pronunciations rather than paying attention to the fact that there's no such thing as "Asian" pronunciation and they're all based on DIFFERENT Earth cultures. So his pronunciations are also wrong.

I hope I didn't seem like I was jumping on you with that, but I thought the same thing for a long time, and when I realized, "nope, M. Night was an idiot about that too!" it was fun to share.
