Hate to break it to you but the last part of your secret effectively nullifies the rest of it. Also, if you're so hung up on accuracy for the Norse gods why are you not complaining about "Sif the Golden-Haired" having dark hair?

Funny, given all the images of Hogun I've seen from the comics, the casting of him was pretty okay. (But then, I've not seen all that many Thor comics. Not my favourite.)

...yep, that's really the only thing I had to comment on.

Except to say that Heimdall is possibly one of my favourite characters in that movie. HOLY FUCK so much badassery.

While I see where you're coming from, it wasn't just the fact it was a different race that was the issue. It was the fact that they, specifically, changed a minority character [or, rather, characters] to white.

Ehh, I suspect I'm just taking wank-bait, but comparing the incorrect-to-the-source casting in Thor and The Last Airbender is entirely missing the point. People aren't just angry because the clearly Asian characters were played by white actors; it's because it's pretty fucking rare to see nonwhite protagonists in mainstream American cinema, and in casting white actors TLA destroyed an excellent opportunity for representation. Whereas casting Idris Elba as Heimdall isn't hurting the cause of representation in movies by white dudes, and this is leaving aside the fact that he wasn't playing an actual Nordic person, but an alien who Vikings apparently worshipped as a god, so ... mythic/historic accuracy is kind of beside the point.

Also, speaking of accuracy, Hogun's from the comics. Which, shockingly, aren't particularly faithful to the mythology in the first place, or Sif wouldn't have dark hair, Thor and Loki wouldn't be brothers, etc etc.

I do get bothered by these things. The reason I wasn't so bothered by the Thor movie is because I wasn't so invested in the comics.

Than, and because what they did with The Last Airbender was on such a huge fucking scale. Not one of the characters is actually the ethnicity they look like in the cartoon. At least in Thor, Thor actually looks like you'd imagine a Norse God. Hell, in Avatar they actually went as far to change the goddamn buildings . Fire nation, which was always more Japanese inspired, now had Indian temples.

At least in Thor, the universe had the look and feel it should have.

tl, dr: I can understand how Heimdall would bother you on a personal level. However, it does not compare to the casting and universe overhaul they did with TLA. (Must stop raging now)

I understand this argument - in theory. In reality, One of These Things is Not Like the Other. The ATLA movie was very careful to cast extras of the "right" races, but then inexplicably the main characters all had to be white.

I could actually sort of agree with this, if only because the only reason they could have had to cast Heimdall as a black man was to fit the Big Scary Black Man trope.

Really? Because prior to the film being released, all I saw was bitching about his casting. Most people since seem to have changed their minds after seeing his badassery.

I'm actually surprised that a small portion of fandom still complain about Nick Fury's casting.

Because with A:TLA, Hollywood had an opportunity to cast an entirely minority cast, and instead went as white as possible. Also, while Heimdal was awesome when he was on screen, he was by no means a main character. Could you imagine if they had casted Harry, Hermione, and Ron in Harry Potter with people who were not the correct race/looked totally wrong. People would've flipped, and rightfully so. They're iconic characters, and they should be represented in the movies by actors who properly look the part.

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko are the iconic characters from A:TLA, and they looked nothing like they were supposed to. Even if you didn't care about the race changes, how can you not be a little miffed that you can't even recognize the main characters of a series you love?
