Because with A:TLA, Hollywood had an opportunity to cast an entirely minority cast, and instead went as white as possible. Also, while Heimdal was awesome when he was on screen, he was by no means a main character. Could you imagine if they had casted Harry, Hermione, and Ron in Harry Potter with people who were not the correct race/looked totally wrong. People would've flipped, and rightfully so. They're iconic characters, and they should be represented in the movies by actors who properly look the part.

Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko are the iconic characters from A:TLA, and they looked nothing like they were supposed to. Even if you didn't care about the race changes, how can you not be a little miffed that you can't even recognize the main characters of a series you love?

Exactly. I've heard people argue that they didn't really see the cartoon characters having a specific race. I honestly wonder if they were looking at the same show.

I mean, if someone really like Heimdall from the comics, and they changed him, I can see how that would bother them.

But holy crap, yes it does bother me that the entire cast of The Last Airbender looks wrong. I haven't really seen this done on such an epic scale, and people are rightfully outraged.

As a comics fan, it was actually pointed out in 4chan's /co/ of all places that there were Black Asguardians drawn by Jack Kirby. Who, for pepole who don't care about Thor comics, is a famous-in-his-field artist who first drew Marvel's Thor and fleshed out his world. So if he draws Black Asgardians, they exist, period. An obvious divergence from the myth that, (sorry Asatru secret guy) already establishes it's not the oringinal source material. But, since we know Black Asgardians exist in Jack Kirby's world, having one isn't really that far a stretch.

By contrast, the air nomads appear to be based off Tibetan people, a lot of whom are lighter skinned...

So I can kinda see where Aang could have been casted as caucasian because that might be do-able (Okay new wank thread I just started hypothetical angry posters: I know. This would still have been a problem, lots of people would have called bullshit, I know.) Though the part where casting calls specifically specified a white kid was just fucking weird and proves my thinking was not what was behind this. Especially since no other racebending choice makes any sense at all even by my controversial logic.

Responding anon because I can't be arsed to log in. My apologies.

I actually agree with you about Aang because his ethnicity was a bit more up in the air than a lot of the other kids. Sometimes I saw him as light-skinned Asian, sometimes Caucasian. The ones that really bothered me the most out of the main cast were Sokka, Katara and Zuko because their races were all screwed to hell and the actors they chose for them were so fucking terrible that there was no excuse for it.

I would butt in and say that I'm about 90% sure that Hermione's race is never given in the books, and considering her hair color and all, it wouldn't be totally WRONG WRONG WRONG and incorrect of them to have cast her as a black girl.

That being said, otherwise I agree. :)
