I don't actually know much about Avatar but from what I gather the issue was that the cultural background etc of the characters is a very important part of the show, and because it's rare for minority characters to be given that sort of importance it was very insulting for them to be whitewashed. Thor is not the same sort of situation, and the playing field is not level in the first place. The double standard is in society.

Plus, he was an alien. And while I have seen valid arguments against the casting since the movie was released, previously most of the objections were not exactly motivated by a concern for Scandinavian cultural heritage.
