Maybe, just maybe, and this will sound really stupid and geeky. The whole "muggles" finding out about them was, well, us reading the books? That's my silly guess, anyway.

How would muggles find out about them? Even if someone got evidence of magic on tape or something, it would just be considered a hoax.

...That would have been AWESOME.

I had a (crackalicious) theory that Filch was really Tobias Snape, being hidden at Hogwarts under a story of being a Squib, for his protection and as a guarantee for Severus's good behavior. But seriously, with the talk throughout the series of Muggles not recognizing magic when it's right in front of them, I expected a clued-in Muggle to show up at some point.

You know, this would probably make a great alternate ending story. I know fanfiction isn't the same as the real thing, but it would still be a neat read. Maybe the start of a muggle/wizard war when the wizarding world is only just recovering from its own civil war (because you can only obliviate so many people at a time).

That would have derailed the whole thing :/ It's a cool idea for fanfic, but it doesn't sound necessary for the story itself.

I've seen plenty of RPs with that premise and it's cool there, but for canon? Nah.

If muggles had discovered the wizarding world in canon, I would have sent JKR a truly long letter emphasizing my sheer disappointment. I ENJOYED the fact that the wizarding world was this suuuper-sekrit world hidden away from the average eye. I don't like the idea of muggles and wizards mixing. I don't even know why. I just don't.

The red herrings in the early books make for such excellent fanfic fodder. (Although yeah, I too wish a few more of them had turned out to actually be important.)
